SCSU Men's Basketball Set to Face Franklin Pierce in First Round of NE10 Tournament

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Southern Connecticut Men's Basketball kicks off the Northeast-10 Conference Championship Tournament, taking on the 11 seed Franklin Pierce at home on Friday, February 28th at 7:00 p.m.

The Owls enter the NE10 tournament as the six seed, finishing the regular season with a 16-10 record, going 12-8 in conference play. Southern is heading into the postseason on fire, winning their last three games and six of their last seven. A slow start and injuries saw the Owls open the season 2-5 against NE10 opponents, but they have been dominant since the start of the new year. Since January 8th, they have a record of 11-3 and a score differential of +191. 

The Owls vs. The Ravens
  • The Owls defeated Franklin Pierce in both matchups between the two teams this season.
  • The first matchup was away in Rindge, New Hampshire on January 18th, where Southern won 105-74, knocking down 18 three pointers.
  • At home on February 22nd, they won 107-65.
  • The wins are two of the four-highest scoring totals in the NE10 this season, with 107 tying the most scored in a game this year. 
  • In the two games, the Owls shot an impressive 78-142 (54.9%) from the field, including 34-63 (54%!) from three.
  • Albert Vargas has been dominant in both games, scoring 17 points in the first matchup and recording 21 points, six rebounds, and five assists in the second.
  • Isaac Hester tied his season high of 21 points in the first matchup, as did Chris Joe with 15. 
  • Antonio Chandler double-doubled with 11 points and 13 rebounds in the first game, also recording two blocks and two steals. He also scored 18 points and grabbed six boards in the second game. 
  • Cherif Diarra scored 10 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and threw four assists in the first matchup after missing the first due to injury. He also recorded three steals on three straight possessions to start the second half. 
  • Sean James scored 11 points in the second game against the Ravens, also adding 4 assists. He has been on fire as of recently, scoring in double digits in four of his last five games and shooting 24-31 (77.4%!!!) from deep. He exploded off the bench on senior night against Saint Anselm, scoring 12 straight on 4-5 from deep in the first half. 

2024 NE10 Tournament
  • In the NE10 Tournament last season, the Owls advanced to the Championship game for the second time ever, falling shot against Southern New Hampshire.
  • Their postseason run included a thrilling overtime victory over American International and wins over Bentley and Saint Anselm, also featuring an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II East Region Tournament. 
  • They sit at an overall record of 10-13 in the NE10 Tournament

The Owls will take on Franklin Pierce at 7:00 p.m. at James Moore Fieldhouse.
