Box Score WALTHAM, Mass. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball fell to no. 1, Bentley University, 75-55 on Thursday night in the NE10 Championship Tournament Semifinals. The Owls dropped to an overall record of 19-10 while the Falcons improved to an overall record of 29-1 and advanced to the NE10 Championship game.
Delaney Haines led the Owls with 17 points, as she made a team-best of two three-pointers and was 3-for-3 from the free-throw line.
Katie Williamson and
Ally Sentance both had nine points, as Williamson was 5-for-6 from the free-throw line, had two steals and two blocks. Sentance grabbed a rebound and had a block.
Jillian Martin had eight points, was 2-for-3 from beyond the arc, had three assists and two steals.
Hope Fox and
Rheyna Steinauer had five points, as Fox grabbed five boards, four assists and a steal. Steinauer led the team with six boards and was 2-for-2 from the free-throw line.
In the first quarter,
Katie Williamson and
Delaney Haines got the scoring started for the Owls. It was the Falcons who jumped out to an early 10-4 lead halfway through. However, Williamson,
Hope Fox and
Ally Sentance cut the lead down with made layups. Bentley responded with a made layup of their own, to bring the lead back to four, with a 16-12 advantage.
In the second quarter, once again, Williamson scored the first two points of the quarter to cut the lead to two, but the Falcons answered back with made baskets.
Jillian Martin and Haines gave the Owls' five huge points to try to gain control of momentum; nonetheless, Bentley would keep their momentum going. Southern made some big defensive stops against the Falcons yet Bentley grew their advantage to 10 points. It was Ally Sentence who helped the Owls on the offensive end with nine total points in the first half. The Falcons headed into halftime with a 36-26 lead over the Owls.
In the third quarter, Bentley scored on their first possession from beyond the arc as
Rheyna Steinauer responded with a three-pointer of her own, with an assist by
Hope Fox. It was a back-and-forth trade of points, with every basket that the Owls would make, the Falcons would go down the court and make their own shots, to extend their lead. Haines made a driving layup to cut the lead to 10 points, going into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter, yet again, the Owls worked hard to make comeback with made baskets by
Rheyna Steinauer and
Delaney Haines early in the quarter; however, the Falcons never lost control of their constant momentum, as they increased their lead to double digits as time ticked down.
The Owls will wait to see if they will be selected in the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Tournament. The selection show will be on Sunday, March 9 at 10:30 p.m. ET.
