SCSU Baseball Sweeps AIC On A Walk-Off and Complete Game Shutout

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut baseball swept American International in a doubleheader at The Ballpark at SCSU. The Owls took the first game, which was the third Northeast-10 Conference game between the two teams, 9-8 in 10 innings on a walk-off single by Jack Drewry. The Owls came back to win the second game, a non-conference matchup, 9-0, to improve to 20-14 overall and now stand at 8-7 in the NE10.

Drewry was 5-for-8 for the twin bill with a three-run homer, five RBI and five runs scored for the afternoon. Drewry also played in career games 194 and 195 for the fourth-most games played in program history. The record of 204 was set by Mike DeMartino from 2017 through 2022.

The Owls saw gutsy performances from a trio of freshman pitches in the doubleheader. Jace Alvino took the no-decision in Game 1 after giving up five runs on nine hits while striking out six of 5 2/3. Harry Roy picked up the win in the come-from-behind win after logging 4 1/3 innings with three runs scored on one hit with five strikeouts. In Game 2, which was a predetermined bullpen game by Tim Shea, the Owls got a complete shutout from Trace Morales who scattered seven hits while striking out five for his first career win.

GAME 1
The first game was a roller coaster as both teams traded the lead. AIC took a 1-0 on a solo homer in the first before the Owls manufactured a run in the bottom half of the inning to tie it up. Alvino held the Yellow Jackets scoreless over the next two innings. In the bottom of the 3rd, Derrick Jagello and Jake Gruttadauria both singled before Drewry stroked a three-run homer to give Southern a 4-1 lead. Patrick Dillon then crushed the first pitch of the next at-bat to give the Owls back-to-back homers and a 5-1 lead.

In the 5th, AIC threated to break out when Leandro Guevara's two-out single brought home Yeudy Ramirez, but the relay from Izaiah Walker to Dillon and then to Brennan Staubley got Josh Frometa at the plate to end the inning with the Owls holding a 5-2 lead.

AIC tied the game in the 6th on a two-run homer by Kiernan Caffrey and a RBI single to knot it at 5-5. Harry Roy replaced Alvino on the mound to get the final out.

The game remained tied at 5-5 until the bottom of the 8th. Drewry walked, Dillon singled and Walker was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Chad Fedeli then hit a deep fly to center that scored Drewry to give the Owls a 6-5 lead.

In the top of the 9th, Roy retired the first batter before hitting Ramirez with a pitch, who then stole second. Roy retired Frometa for the second out and intentially walked Guevara before Nick Serce hit an opposite drive that caught the wind and cleared the fence to give AIC an 8-6 lead. In the 9th, Spencer Chard worked a walk before Staubley blasted a two-run homer to tie the game 8-8 and send the game to extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th, Jagello singled to lead off the inning before Chard bunted him over. After Staubley struck out, Jagello moved to third on a wild pitch. Gruttadauria walked an stole second. With the infield shifted over, and the third baseman closer to short, Drewry hit a ball up the third base line allowing Jagello to score the game-winning run.

GAME 2
Game 2 of the doubleheader was all Morales as he dominated AIC over seven innings. Morales pitched out a two-hit jam in the 1st and then allowed only a single in the 2nd. In the bottom of the 2nd, Drewry and Auggie Albert singled to lead off the inning before Walked doubled down the left field line to score Drewry. Brady Chernovitz then drove in Albert with a base hit to left before Aidan Hyams hit a sacrifice fly to score Walker. Connor Powell then singled home Chernovetz and Alex Cappullucci's RBI single scored Powell to give Southern a 5-0 lead.

Southern struck for two more in the bottom of the 5th when Albert hit a sacrifice fly to score Dillon and Hyams doubled home Drewry. Powell then hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 6th before Albert singled through the left side to score Chard.

Southern is back in NE10 play when it travels to Manchester, N.H. on Tuesday, April 22 to take on Saint Anselm in a doubleheader at 12 p.m.
