SCSU Baseball Defeats New Haven, 14-7

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut baseball defeated New Haven, 14-7, in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup in West Haven, Conn. With the win, Southern improved to 15-9 overall and 3-1 in the NE10 while New Haven dropped to 15-8 overall and 4-5 in conference play.

Brennan Staubley had his third-straight multiple-hit game as he went 2-for-5 with a RBI double and two runs scored. Staubley has three multiple-hit performances in his last four games. Spencer Chard was also 2-for-5 with four runs scored with two stolen bases. Jake Gruttadauria was 2-for-5 with a RBI and run scored while Patrick Dillon was 3-for-5 with three runs scored an a RBI. Zak Droukas was 2-for-5 with three RBI. On the mound, Spencer Fox picked up the win in relief to improve to 2-3 on the year. Fox held the Chargers to one run on seven hits while striking out seven over six innings of work.



The Owls got on the board early when Spencer Chard led off the game with a walk before Brennan Staubley's double was misplayed by the right fielder, allowing him to come all the way around give the Owls a 2-0 lead. The Owls scored three more to take a 5-0 lead in the top of the second. Izaiah Walker and Chad Fedeli both reached on an error before Derrick Jagello's ground ball to second scored Walker. Fedeli then scored on a wild pitch before Chard, who also reached an error, went to second on a wild pitch and stole third, scored on a wild pitch.

In the third, Patrick Dillon singled before Walker was hit by a pitch and Fedeli walked to load the bases. Zak Droukas' sacrifice fly scored Dillon to make it 6-1. In the 4th, Southern strung together six hits for four runs. Chard, Staubley and Jake Gruttadauria led off the inning with singles before Jack Drewry's fly ball to center scored Chard. After a wild pitch moved Staubley and Gruttadauria up, Dillon singled to score Staubley before Gruttadauria scored on a balk and Walker drove in Dillon to give Southern a 103 lead. UNH scored twice in the bottom of the inning to make it 10-6.

UNH scored again to make it 10-7. In the seventh, Chard singled and then scored on Gruttadauria's single. In the 8th, Dillon reached on a single before Droukas drove him in to give the Owls a 12-7 lead. Southern pushed across two more runs in their final at-bat.

The Owls return to action this weekend when they travel to Garden City, N.Y. for a three-game Northeast-10 Conference matchup at Adelphi on Apr. 5-6.
