SCSU Field Hockey Edged By SNHU, 2-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University field hockey put forth a gritty defensive performance and generated plenty of offensive opportunities, but the Owls were unable to find the net in a 2-0 loss to Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at Jess Dow Field. The defeat dropped SCSU to 0-3 on the season, while SNHU improved to 1-2 in a tightly contested matchup that saw the Owls' goalkeeper shine.

Despite outpacing the Penmen in penalty corners 13-8 and forcing SNHU into a scoreless first quarter, SCSU couldn't convert their chances into goals. The Owls peppered the SNHU net with 13 shots, including 10 on target, showcasing an aggressive attack led by Taylor Leckey's five shots and Keana Criscuolo's three.

Rachel Miller was a standout for SCSU in goal, recording 13 saves on 15 shots faced over the full 60 minutes. Her heroics kept the Owls in the game, particularly in the third quarter when SNHU unleashed 13 shots but managed only one goal.

The game remained scoreless through the first quarter, where SCSU's defense held firm, allowing just three shots while earning nine penalty corners. The Owls created several scoring threats early, with Isabella Taylor and Natalia Fiato combining for shots. A flurry of penalty corners in the closing minutes of the period saw Taylor Leckey and Keana Criscuolo test the SNHU keeper.

SNHU broke through in the second quarter at 21:32 when Minke van de Poll scored off an assist from Abby Forbes following a penalty corner. SCSU responded with pressure, earning two more penalty corners and a shot from Lindsey Onofrio, but the Owls trailed 1-0 at halftime.

The third quarter saw SNHU pull ahead further at 43:46 on an unassisted goal by Addison Battis after a rebound sequence. Despite the deficit, SCSU continued to fight, with Criscuolo forcing a save at 40:30. The Owls' defense, anchored by McKenzie Fairfax, Ruby Webb and Lark Johnson, limited damage amid SNHU's shot barrage.

In the fourth quarter, SCSU pushed for a comeback, earning a late penalty corner at 58:58 that led to a Criscuolo shot turned back. The Owls pressured late in the period, but time ran out on their rally.

Leckey led SCSU with five shots (two on goal), while Lindsey Onofrio and Isabella Taylor each added two shots on target. Natalia Fiato contributed one shot on goal and was instrumental in setting up penalty corners. The Owls' 13 penalty corners highlighted their territorial advantage, though conversions proved elusive.

SCSU will look to bounce back and secure their first win of the season when it hosts Mercy on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 12 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
