SCSU Volleyball Defeats Dominican, 3-0 For Fourth Straight Win

NEW HAVEN, Conn.-- Southern Connecticut volleyball defeated Dominican University of New York, 3-0 on Tuesday in a non-conference match-up at Pelz Gym. The Owls improved to an overall record of 8-3, while the Chargers dropped to 4-5. It was the Owls' fourth win in a row and fifth victory sweep of the season.

Kimi Mitchell recorded her first double-double tallying 32 assists and 14 digs. Mitchell also had four service aces which is a new career high. Kerrigan Habing led the Owls with 13 kills and Sarah Henault added 16 digs. 

Early on in the first set, it was a back-and-forth battle; however, at the 6-3 mark the Owls began to pull away. The Owls went on an 6-0 run that featured three service aces by Dylan Marney to take a 12-3 lead. After a brief comeback from the Chargers, the Owls regained possession with the score 14-9 and went on another run. The Owls scored eight unanswered featuring two kills from Katie Bardak, one from Sarah Stark and one from Victoria Pascual, two service aces from Mitchell and a few attack errors by the Chargers. The Owls closed out the set with three unanswered to take set one 25-11. 

In the second set, The Owls and Chargers went back-and-forth all throughout with no team leading by more than four points. The Chargers held an 11-9 lead, but the Owls went on yet another run. The Owls went on a 6-0 run featuring a Mitchell kill, a few attack errors by the Chargers and two kills from Habing. After the run, the Chargers began to come back tying the set at 18. The set would stay tied until it was 25-25 with clutch kills by Habing, Ceci Carter and Jasmine Stroud keeping the Owls in it. With the set tied 25-25, Habing came up big again putting the Owls up 26-25. After Habing, it was a Pascual kill that would win it for the Owls 27-25. 

The third set featured a series of momentum swings, which kept it tight throughout.
Southern would take a 21-16 lead late; however, once again the Chargers came back to bring the score within one at 21-20. The Owls then took advantage of some Charger mistakes late, scoring their last four points on three attack errors and a service error to take the set 25-23. 

The Owls are back in action on Oct. 3 when they travel to Rockville Centre, N.Y. to take on Molloy University in a non-conference match-up at 6:00pm. The Owls return to Pelz Gym on Oct. 10 for their first Northeast-10 conference matchup of the season against Assumption at 5:00pm.
