SCSU Men's Basketball Tops SNHU 72-55

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball defeated Southern New Hampshire, 72-55, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls improved to 7-5 overall and 3-1 in the NE10 while the Penmen dropped to 7-7 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

Malik Banks led three Owls in double figures with 17 points after knocking down 7-of-12 from the floor and 5-of-8 from three-point range. Banks also had six rebounds and four assists. Christian McClease came off the bench for the first time this season and scored a season-best 17 points with four assists. McClease converted on 3-of-6 from three-point range and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. Cherif Diarra had 12 points and nine rebounds with two blocks.



Southern led from the opening tip while its largest lead, 60-40, came midway through the second half. The Owls hit 50% (15-30) from the floor in the first half to give themselves a 36-26 cushion at the break. They then led the second half, 36-29, on their way to its third conference win. The Owls have now won five of their last six games.

The first four minutes of the game saw both teams trade baskets before Southern took a 10-6 lead. NE10 leading scorer JoJo Wallace knocked down a three to pull the Penmen within a point, 10-9. Banks scored five-straight points before Diarra had a three-point play and McClease knocked down one from long range to give the Owls a 21-12 lead with 12 minutes to play.

Wallace responded but Banks came back with another three to answer the call. A pair of free throws after a small run pulled SNHU within a basket, 24-22, with 9:05 to play. The Owls came right back with a 9-0 run to take a 31-22 lead. The Owls ultimately closed the half on a 12-5 run to take a 36-26 lead into halftime.

McClease took over the game in the second half as he scored 12 of his 17 points to pad the Owls' lead late in the game. Banks also chipped in another eight points down the stretch to lead Southern. The Owls hit on 13-of-27 from the floor and 5-of-13 from three-point range.

Southern is back in action when it hosts Assumption on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
