SCSU Men's Basketball Falls To Assumption, 74-68

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut men's basketball lost to Assumption, 74-68, in a Northeast 10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. With the loss, the Owls dropped to 7-6 overall and 3-2 in the NE10 while Assumption improved to 10-5 overall and 5-1 in the conference.

Cherif Diarra put up his fifth double-double performance of the season with 14 points and 14 rebounds while also adding six assists. Diarra also finished with two steals and a block to fill out the box score. His 14 rebounds give him 918 of his career which ties him with John Lavery'76 for fourth place in career rebounds in program history.

Malik Banks led the Owls with 18 points while also dishing out five assists and Kazell Stewart came off the bench to total 11 points, five rebounds and a team-best three blocks in the game.



Southern held a 24-10 lead with 9:33 to play in the first half with Cherif Diarra (8 pts) and Malik Banks (7 pts) leading the way. The Greyhounds responded with a 22-7 run over the next eight minutes to take a 29-28 lead with 1:11 to play.  After taking a three-point lead, 32-29, the Owls scored the last four points of the half to take a 33-32 advantage into the break.

Coming out of the break, Assumption used a 14-6 edge over the first five minutes of the half to take a 46-39 lead. Southern counted with a 6-0 run, capped by a three-pointer by Christian McClease to make it 46-45, with 13 minutes to play. Southern stayed with Assumption down the stretch but the Greyhounds' held on for the win.

Southern (42.9%) outshot the Greyhounds (37.7%) for the game while both teams combined to go 7-for-33 from three-point range. In the end, Assumption was 24-for-31 at the free throw line, against 15 Southern free throws made, which stood as the difference in the game.

Southern finds itself on the road for the next two games as they travel to American International on Saturday, Jan. 17 and Saint Anselm on Monday, Jan. 19. The Owls return home on Wednesday, Jan. 21 to host Adelphi at 5:30 p.m.
