SCSU Men's Basketball Drops Matchup against American International

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Southern Connecticut men's basketball lost to American International, 65-57. The Owls drop to 7-7 on the season, and 3-3 in conference play.

Justice Ellison led the way with 22 points on 50% shooting, also knocking down 10 free throws and grabbing seven boards. Kazell Stewart scored 16 off the bench, adding eight rebounds and going a perfect 8-8 from the line. Cherif Diarra scored eight points and grabbed 13 boards, also blocking three shots.

The Yellow Jackets came out of the gate hot, jumping out to a 6-0 lead. The Owls were quick to respond, however, cutting the lead down to one and staying within a possession of the lead for a large chunk of the opening minutes. Justice Ellison and Kazell Stewart contributed some key baskets early, but AIC maintained their advantage, growing the lead to double figures with six and a half minutes to go in the first half. Four straight from Stewart would cut into the lead, and the Owls would head into the break down eight.

American International's defense was impressive to start the second half, holding the Owls off the scoreboard until just under the 16 minute mark. The lead would hover around 10 for the first eight minutes of the quarter, but Southern came storming back, cutting the lead down to four after a 6-0 run from Stewart and Ellison. AIC would respond, bumping their lead back up to eight, and were able to hold on despite a few more comeback attempts from the Owls.

Southern will be back on the road in their next matchup when they take on Saint Anselm on Monday, January 19th.
