SCSU Men's Basketball Drops Matchup Against Saint Anselm, 86-78

MANCHESTER, N.H. - Southern Connecticut men's basketball came up short against Saint Anselm, losing 86-78. The Owls drop to 7-8 on the season, 3-4 in Northeast 10 Conference Play.

Justice Ellison led the way with a season-high 27 points, also grabbing four rebounds. Kazell Stewart scored 16 in his first start of the season, adding eight rebounds, and Malik Banks knocked down a trio of three-pointers en route to 13 points. Cherif Diarra led the team with 12 rebounds, scoring six points as well.

The Owls jumped out to a small lead against the top team in the NE10 to start the game, with early baskets from Justice Ellison and Kazell Stewart. Jahlil Bethea knocked down a three to push the lead to four, but the Hawks would jump ahead 15-13 with just over 12 minutes to go in the half. Saint Anselm's high-powered offense would start to settle in, but the Owls hung with them, keeping the lead to single digits until the 1:12 mark, when Saint Anselm would jump ahead by 10, maintaining the lead into the break.

Southern started the second half strong with more points from Steward and Ellison cutting the lead all the way down to four, but Saint Anselm responded, jumping ahead by 18 with 10 minutes to go. The Owls started to creep back into the game, mostly to Ellison, who scored 19 of his 27 points in the second half. The lead would ultimately shrink all the way to six, with Malik Banks adding some key baskets, but the Hawks were able to knock down a dagger three-pointer and their free throws to put the Owls away.

Southern returns home for their next matchup when they take on Adelphi on Wednesday, January 21st.
