Owls Win Streak Hits Six With 65-51 Win Against Adelphi

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball defeated Adelphi, 65-51, in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at James Moore Field House. With the win, the Owls won their sixth-straight game to improve to 7-1 in NE10 play and 12-4 overall while Adelphi dropped to 9-6 overall and 3-5 in conference play.

Tish Blackwood turned in another dominant performance with 19 points and 14 rebounds for her fifth-straight double-double and NE10 leading sixth of the season. Ally Sentance had a career-best 18 points with five rebounds and four assists. Sentance converted on 4-of-8 from three-point range. Taeya Steinauer had nine points, five rebounds and four assists while Hope Fox filled in the box score with six points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. Jillian Martin led the Owls with six assists.

 


Since being inserted into the Owls lineup four games again, Blackwood has averaged a double-double with 13.8 points and 13.8 rebounds per game in that span. Sentance is now shooting into the game shooting 48.9% (22-45) from long range over the last eight games.  

The first quarter saw both teams feeling each other out over the opening minutes before Adelphi took a 5-4 lead. From there, Southern took off on a 16-4 run that gave the Owls an 20-9 lead with 32-seconds to play in the first frame. Sentance got going early from the outside with a pair of three-pointers in the run.

Southern extended its lead to the half after outscoring the Panthers, 12-9, in the second quarter to head to the break with a 32-18 advantage. Blackwood continued to lead the Owls on the boards with six while also scoring a team-high nine points in the first 20 minutes of the game. Sentance chipped in eight with four rebounds while Taeya Steinauer had six points and four rebounds. Adelphi's 18 points were the fewest an opponent scored against the Owls in the first half of a game this season. The last time the Owls held an opponent to 18 points in the first half was a year against Adelphi at James Moore Field House.

Adelphi exploded in the third quarter and blitzed the Owls, outscoring Southern, 24-18, to pull within eight points, 50-42, heading to the final period. The Panthers used 9-of-13 shooting from the floor and 4-of-5 from long range to trim the Owls' lead.

Down the stretch, Adelphi got as close as 10 points in the final 10 minutes, but the Owls held the Panthers scoreless over the final 3:40 to seal the win.

Southern is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 24 when it travels to Colchester, Vt. to take on Saint Michael's in a NE10 matchup set for 1:30 p.m. Southern will return home for three-straight games at James Moore Field House against Saint Anselm on Tuesday, Jan. 27, Bentley on Saturday, Jan. 31 and Pace on Wednesday, Feb. 4.
