SCSU Women's Basketball Defeats No. 18 Bentley, 57-39

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball shocked No. 18 Bentley, 57-39, in a meeting of the Northeast-10 Conference's top two teams. With the win, the Owls improved to 15-4 overall and 10-1 in the NE10 while Bentley dropped to 14-3 overall and 10-1 in conference play. The two teams are now tied for first in the NE10 standings after each squad took their home contests. Southern has also won nine-straight games, it's longest winning streak since the 2006-07 season when Southern won the first 20 games of the season en route to the NCAA Division II National Champioship.

Rheyna Steinauer led the Owls with 21 points, including a team-best three, three-pointers, and eight rebounds. Tish Blackwood had 18 points and 14 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season while also adding three blocks. Taeya Steinauer flirted with a triple double with eight points, seven rebounds and six assists.

The win against Bentley was the Owls' first against the Falcons since Jan. 28, 2023, and was the largest margin of victory against Bentley in Owls' history. The Owls' victory also ended Bentley's 28-game winning streak in NE10 play, dating back to last season. The Owls' 18-point margin against the Falcons was Bentley's worst defeat since a 20-point loss to Eckerd, 71-51, on Nov. 26, 2022. It was also the first time Bentley was held under 40 points in 99 games, dating back to Jan. 21, 2023.

The game started with a three-pointer by Bentley in the opening seconds – which stood as the Falcons only lead of the game. The Owls held a 15-12 lead after the first quarter and 26-19 at halftime. Southern also flustered the Falcons on the defensive end as the Falcons shot just 30% (8-26) in the first half.  The Owls' largest lead of the first half, 26-19, came after a determined performance by freshman standout Blackwood who led the Owls with 11 points and six rebounds in the game's first 20 minutes.

Southern also managed to outscore Bentley, 18-3, over a 10-minute stretch over the closing minutes of the second quarter and the start of the third. All nine of Rheyna's first-half points came in the run, while the Owls held Bentley to 1-of-16 shooting from the floor in the stretch. It was a three-pointer from Jillian Martin that gave the Owls a 35-21 lead with 6:26 remaining in the third quarter. That run grew to 24-5 over a 14-minute stretch with Steinauer scoring 15 of the Owls' points as they took an 18-point lead, 41-23, through the third.

Overall, the Owls held Bentley to just 11 points over the second and third quarters and led by as many as 23 points, 57-34, late in the game.

Southern is back in action against Pace on Wednesday, Feb. 4 at 5:30 p.m. at James Moore Field House.
