Tish Blackwood Nets Career-Best 26, SCSU Women's Basketball Tops Pace, 69-56

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut extended its winning streak to 10 games with a 69-56 win against Pace at James Moore Field House. With the win, Southern improved to 16-4 overall and 11-1 in the Northeast 10 while Pace dropped to 6-15 overall and 2-10 in conference play.
 
Tish Blackwood scored a career-best 26 points including 16 in the second half while also totaling seven rebounds and six assists. Taeya Steinauer had 16 points and four steals while Rheyna Steinauer had 15 points and seven rebounds.


 
Southern opened the game with an 8-0 run that saw Taeya Steinauer score half of the Owls' points. Pace responded with an 11-2 run that cut Southern's lead to 11-10. The Owls closed out the first quarter with a 7-3 run to head into the first break with a 17-14 lead. Taeya had seven of the Owls' 17 points while Hope Fox and Rheyna each had four.
 
The second quarter tilted the opposite way as Pace outscored Southern, 18-14, to take a 32-31 lead into halftime. The Owls shot just 7-of-20 from the floor in the second quarter but Blackwood led the way with eight points. Pace took its first lead of the game at the 4:44 mark when they jumped ahead, 24-23. The Setters outscored Southern, 12-8, over the final 6:29 of the period to head into the break with the edge. Blackwood scored six of her eight first half points over the stretch.
 
Coming out of the break, Southern and Pace traded baskets over the first five minutes of the third quarter. Southern then blasted off on a 19-4 run, including a 12-0 run that forced a Pace time-out with two minutes to go, to take a 55-41 lead in the closing minutes of the frame. Southern outscored Pace, 24-11, in the third and headed to the final period with a 55-43 lead. Blackwood continued to lead the Owls, scoring nine points in the third that saw Southern shoot 7-for-11 from the field.
 
Southern pushed its lead to 16 points, 65-49 with 3:11 to play, on a three-pointer by Taeya. Down the stretch, it was Blackwood with six points in the final four minutes that pushed her past her career mark and the Owls to victory.

Southern will be on the road for its next two games which sees the Owls head to Manchester, N.H. on Saturday, Feb. 7 to face Southern New Hampshire before a trip to Worcester, Mass. to face Assumption on Tuesday, Feb. 10. The Owls return home on Saturday, Feb. 14 to host American International.

This special event will take place during SCSU's basketball doubleheader against American International College and will feature a vibrant halftime performance by Bleach the Drag Queen.
 
The afternoon tips off with the Women's Basketball game at 1:30 PM, followed by the Men's Basketball game at 3:30 PM. Fans attending either (or both!) games can enjoy the excitement of competition alongside a dynamic drag performance that brings energy, joy, and visibility to the celebration.
