SCSU Football Tops Monroe, 35-28, In Homecoming Win

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - John Amaning ran for three touchdowns and Southern Connecticut State State University football rallied from behind to beat Monroe University, 35-28, in front of a crowd of over 3,000 SCSU fans on-hand for Homecoming & Family Weekend at Jess Dow Field.

The Owls scored 21 unanswered points in the second half to overcome a 28-14 deficit and improve in front of 3,377 fans on a 65-degree sunny afternoon at Jess Dow.

Monroe struck fast, with a 44-yard touchdown and then another later in the quarter to give the Mustangs a 14-0 lead.  Southern responded. Amaning, who finished with 146 yards on 30 carries, cut the lead to 14-7 with 13:30 left in the second quarter on a 14-yard run to end an 8-play, 75-yard drive.

Monroe answered with its longest drive of the day, a 14-play, 75-yard march that consumed 9:23 that saw the visitors take a 21-7 lead heading into intermission.

SCSU found its rhythm after halftime. Amaning scored from 12 yards out with 10:05 left in the third to finish a 6-play, 39-yard drive and make it 21-14. Monroe pushed back immediately, scoring on a 2-yard run to cap a 7-play, 75-yard drive and restore a two-score lead at 28-14.

The Owls closed the third with another Amaning score, a 2-yard run with 1:03 remaining that completed a 9-play, 64-yard drive and cut the deficit to 28-21.

The fourth quarter belonged to Southern. After forcing a Monroe punt, SCSU tied the game on two plays. Brandon Jorgensen, who was 16-for-19 for 186 yards, hit Andres Perez for a 31-yard touchdown with 6:38 left. Jorgensen threw a dart to Perez in stride, who then broke three tackles before carrying a Mustang defender into the end zone. Perez led all receivers with nine catches for 132 yards and the tying score.

Monroe's next possession ended with an interception by Owls freshman Emeka Yearwood, his first of the season, and SCSU converted the short field. Jorgensen scored on a 1-yard keeper with 2:57 remaining to cap a 5-play, 39-yard drive. Daniel Benzi was 5-for-5 on extra points.

The Owls defense held from there to cap off a scoreless final 20:27.

Jorgensen added five net rushing yards and the go-ahead score to his efficient passing day, despite being sacked twice. SCSU rushed 40 times for 148 yards and four touchdowns while holding Monroe to 13-for-21 passing with one interception.

Jeremiah Covington-Griggs led Southern with nine tackles, including 1.5 for loss, and Yearwood added nine tackles and the decisive interception. Peter Dempsey also had six tackles with a sack, a quarterback hurry and also forced a fumble.

Southern gets back into Northeast 10 play when it hosts Assumption on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 2 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
