SCSU Volleyball Falls To Bentley, 3-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Southern Connecticut State University volleyball fought off a two-set deficit with a dominant third set but could not sustain the momentum, falling to Bentley 3-1 (27-25, 25-18, 20-25, 25-18) in a Northeast 10 Conference match at Pelz Gym. The loss drops the Owls to 13-6 overall and 4-2 in the NE10. Bentley, which entered unbeaten in conference play, improved to 15-6 and 4-0.

Kerrigan Habing led the Owls with 14 kills and added 10 digs for a double-double. Sydney Bennett added nine kills and a team-high six blocks, finishing with 12.5 points. Marisabelle Sias was efficient with seven kills on 15 attempts without an error for a .467 percentage.

Kimi Mitchell directed the offense with 27 assists and chipped in nine digs and two blocks. Victoria Pascual anchored the back row with a team-high 16 digs and added a service ace, while Sarah Henault posted 15 digs, five assists and a team-high three aces.

In the opening set, Southern Connecticut led early behind a Pascual ace and blocks from Bennett and Mitchell, but Bentley answered late. With the score tied at 25, Bentley forced back-to-back SCSU errors to steal the set 27-25.

Bentley carried that momentum into the second set. The Falcons hit .395 with 16 kills against just one error, building separation with a four-point run. Facing a sweep, Southern responded emphatically in the third. Trailing 6-2 early, the Owls engineered a six-point surge behind Alyssa Ferreira's serving, with back-to-back kills from Bennett and a Habing finish to take an 8-6 lead. SCSU never trailed again, hitting .186 while holding Bentley to a .000 mark with eight kills and eight errors. Sophia Guzman and Sias provided key kills down the stretch, and Bennett and Habing combined on the final block to secure a 25-20 win.

The fourth set slipped away quickly. Bentley used a 6-0 run to build an 11-6 cushion. Southern cut the deficit to 14-13 on a run fueled by Pascual's serving and errors by Bentley, but the Falcons closed with an 11-5 burst.

Southern returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 20 when it hosts American International at 5 p.m. at Pelz Gym. The night will also celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with free t-shirts for the first 100 fans, a performance by OLAS and a food truck.
