Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

SCSU Men's Soccer Falls To Assumption, 2-1, On Last-Minute Goal

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer dropped a Northeast 10 heartbreaker to Assumption, 2-1, with the Greyhounds' game-winner coming in the final minute of play. The loss dropped Southern Connecticut to 3-4-6 overall and 2-2-3 in the NE10 while Assumption improved to 6-5-3 overall and 3-2-2 in conference play.

Gisli Agustsson gave the Owls a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute with his fifth goal of the season, but Assumption scored twice in the second half with the game-winner coming with 44 seconds left off a rebound.
For 59 minutes, the Owls' game plan held.

Southern Connecticut absorbed early pressure from Assumption, which generated three corner kicks in the first 19 minutes and forced goalkeeper Diego Flores into three first-half saves. Flores, who finished with six saves on eight shots on goal, kept the match scoreless with stops in the 16th minute, in the 23rd minute and in the 39th.

The Owls grew into the match late in the first half. Gisli Agustsson tested Federico Foganio from distance in the 22nd minute and Izan Vila forced another save two minutes later.

Substitute Jimmy Choi, who entered in the 36th minute, slipped a ball into the box for Agustsson. The junior midfielder finished to the opposite post for his team-leading fifth goal, assisted by Choi. It was Choi's team-leading fourth assist of the season and capped a productive 36-minute shift in which he led SCSU with two shots.

The Owls had a chance to double the advantage immediately after, but Choi's shot in the 57th minute sailed over the bar and Giancarlo Ciotoli missed high in the 67th.

In the 74th minute, Evan Conceicao found Cody Holbert in the middle of the box. Holbert, Assumption's leading scorer, buried his 11th goal of the season past Flores to tie the match at 1-1. The goal shifted the run of play entirely to the visitors, who earned five second-half corners and kept SCSU pinned deep.

Flores kept it level with a save on Paul Booth in the 80th minute and another on Holbert in the 88th, but the pressure finally broke the Owls' back line.

With less than a minute to play, Linhares forced a diving save from Flores at the top of the net. The rebound fell to Fletcher, who scored his fourth goal of the season at 89:16 for the 2-1 lead. It was an unassisted goal and the third shot on goal in a span of two minutes for Assumption.

Southern will close the regular season on the road with trips to American International on Wednesday, Oct. 21 and Bentley on Saturday, Oct. 24.
