SCSU Football Improves To 2-0 In NE10 Play With 40-10 Win At Saint Anselm

MANCHESTER, N.H.— John Amaning ran for two touchdowns, Brandon Jorgensen threw for 258 yards and a score, and Daniel Benzi kicked four field goals as Southern Connecticut State University football rolled past Saint Anselm 40-10 at Grappone Stadium.

The victory marked the first time Southern has scored 30 points in three straight games since 2017.The Owls improved to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Northeast 10 Conference with the win, extending their winning streak behind an offense that has found its rhythm. Saint Anselm dropped to 0-5 in front of 1,776 fans on a sunny 67-degree afternoon in Manchester.

Amaning finished with 92 yards on 15 carries and scored on a pair of 1-yard runs. His first touchdown capped the opening drive of the game — a four-play, 66-yard march that took just 70 seconds. He added his second early in the fourth quarter to make it 30-10. Anthony Rudiman finished with 59 yards on 10 carries and has now scored a touchdown in three straight games.

Jorgensen was efficient through the air, completing 18 of 29 passes for a season-best 258 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. His highlight was a 65-yard touchdown pass to Seth Westover with 13:07 left in the second quarter that pushed the Owls' lead to 20-0. Jorgensen also added 61 yards on the ground on five carries, averaging 12.2 yards per rush.

Westover led all receivers with four catches for 111 yards, his second 100-yard game of the season. Andres Perez added six receptions for 71 yards, and Isaac Lynch had five catches for 47 yards.

Benzi provided the consistent scoring and had his best game of the season. The senior kicker was perfect on the day, going 4-for-4 on field goals — his most in a game this season — and 3-for-3 on extra points at the time. He connected from 32 and 24 yards in the first quarter to make it 13-0, then added a 21-yarder in the third quarter and a season-long 35-yarder early in the fourth. His 15 points accounted for more than a third of Southern's total.

Southern Connecticut never trailed, scoring on its first three possessions and building a 20-0 lead before the Hawks got on the board. The Owls outgained Saint Anselm 518-295 and held the Hawks to 86 rushing yards. The Owls' four sacks were a season-best, while SCSU also forced two interceptions.

Peter Dempsey led the Owls with six tackles, three tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble. Jordan Eli's once-again led the team in tackles with six. Rakaigh Pettway added 1.5 sacks and a fumble recovery, while Justyn Gonzalez and Jeremiah Covington-Griggs each had an interception.

Southern was 7-for-8 in the red zone and converted 5 of 12 third downs. The Owls had 23 first downs and averaged 8.0 yards per play.

Southern Connecticut returns to action when it hosts Monroe for Homecoming on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
