SCSU Women's Soccer Blanks SNHU, 1-0; Bella LaPerle Scores Owls' Only Goal

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Bella LaPerle scored in the seventh minute and the Southern Connecticut State University women's soccer defense made it stand up as the Owls blanked Southern New Hampshire University 1-0 in Northeast 10 Conference matchup at Jess Dow Field.

LaPerle netted her third goal of the season at the 6:27 mark to give SCSU the early lead. The goal held as the game-winner in front of 208 fans, as Southern Connecticut secured its second straight home victory.

The Owls set the tone from the opening whistle. LaPerle's strike was Southern Connecticut's first shot of the day and came before Southern New Hampshire had recorded an attempt. It was one of three shots and two on goal for LaPerle in a full 90-minute effort.

Southern Connecticut controlled the first half, outshooting the Penmen 7-3 and earning two corner kicks. Elizabeth Bishop provided constant pressure up front with six total shots, including one on goal that hit the woodwork in the 50th minute. Ryleigh Phillips added three shots, one on goal, in 72 minutes.

While the Owls had the edge in total shots, 16-11, it was goalkeeper Makenzi Pastreck who ensured the shutout. Pastreck made seven saves on seven shots on goal for her clean sheet, including two saves in the first half and five in the second half under heavy pressure from SNHU.

Pastreck's biggest tests came late. She stopped Emma Noheimer at 68:49 and Jillian Collins at 69:40 in a two-minute span, then denied Lauren Fox in the 76th minute after SNHU pushed numbers forward. In the final eight minutes, she turned away Noheimer again at 82:29 and Briseis Terra at 89:09 to preserve the win.

Southern Connecticut finished with six shots on goal to SNHU's seven. The Owls saw additional chances from Mia Radzik, who had two shots and one on goal in 18 minutes off the bench, and from Julia Salley, Julia Hargraves and Ryleigh Phillips.

The match was physical late, with SCSU whistled for seven fouls in the second half after just one in the first. Southern Connecticut was called for eight fouls total to three for Southern New Hampshire. Madison Taylor of SNHU was shown a yellow card at 82:54.

Corner kicks were even at three apiece.

Southern is back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 6 when it hosts American International at 4 p.m. at Jess Dow Field. The Owls also host Bentley on Friday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m.
