SCSU Men's Soccer Holds Off Adelphi To Pick Up 2-1 NE10 Win

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer broke through in the second half and held on late for a 2-1 Northeast 10 Conference victory against Adelphi at Jess Dow Field. The win bumps the Owls to 3-2-5 overall while they remain undefeated in NE10 play at 2-0-3. Adelphi dropped to 5-5-2 overall and 3-3-0 in conference play.

Andrew Buchanan and Izan Vila scored 19 minutes apart, both off assists from Jimmy Choi, as the Owls earned a NE10 result at home.

After a scoreless first half that featured four saves from goalkeeper Diego Flores, Southern Connecticut State found its rhythm after the break. The Owls outshot Adelphi 7-5 in the second half and turned pressure into production just past the hour. Flores stopped 5-of-6 shots on goal while improving to 3-0-3 on the year.

Buchanan opened the scoring in the 61st minute. Choi, who entered as a substitute in the 39th minute and changed the tempo off the bench, zipped a gorgeous ball into the box for Buchanan to finish his second goal of the season at 60:17 and give SCSU a 1-0 lead.

The goal rewarded sustained possession. SCSU forced Adelphi keeper Andrea Farinella into two saves in the opening 10 minutes of the half, including a low stop on Choi at 47:40.

Southern Connecticut State doubled the lead in the 80th minute with identical chemistry. Choi served as provider again, finding Vila inside the box for the goal. Vila, who started and returned after a second-half substitution, buried his second goal of the year at 79:08 to make it 2-0.

Choi finished with two assists in 48 minutes off the bench, his first multi-assist game of the season, to give him a team-best three helpers for the year. Buchanan and Vila both have two goals apiece for the season.

Adelphi answered immediately to set up a tense finish. Flores and the back line closed out the final 10 minutes. Flores finished with five saves on six shots on goal, including four first-half stops that kept the game level. He denied Suterwalla in the 29th minute and stopped Matthew Murphy twice and Sam Wraith once in a 32nd-minute sequence.

Southern Connecticut State and Adelphi each finished with 11 shots. SCSU put five on target, led by Gísli Ágústsson with three shots and two on frame. Jayson Dumont added two shots. Vila and Choi each put one of two attempts on goal.

Southern Connecticut State's depth proved decisive, with substitutes accounting for both goals and both assists, as the Owls improved their ability to close out one-goal games.

The Owls are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 10 when they travel to Manchester, N.H. to take on Southern New Hampshire. Southern returns home on Tuesday, Oct. 13 to host Molloy at 7 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
