SCSU Women’s Basketball Defeats SNHU, 55-47

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Southern Connecticut women's basketball defeated Southern New Hampshire, 55-47 on Saturday afternoon. The Penmen dropped to an overall record of 11-9 and an NE10 record of 6-7. The Owls improved to an overall record of 17-4 and an NE10 record of 12-1. With the victory, Southern Connecticut has extended their win streak to 11 games in a row.
 
Rheyna Steinauer recorded a team-best of 20 points, as she was 8-for-15 from the floor, grabbed six rebounds and made a team-best of two three-pointers. Taeya Steinauer had 14 points, as she had a team-best of seven assists and two steals. Jillian Martin had 10 points, was 3-for-8 from the floor, made a team-best of two three-pointers, was 2-for-2 from the free-throw line and had two assists and a steal.
 
Ally Sentance had seven points, was 2-for-2 from the free-throw line and had four rebounds. Hope Fox was huge for the Owls, as she grabbed a team-best of 10 rebounds, had a team-best of five steals and dished four assists. Tish Blackwood added eight rebounds, four points and three steals against the Penmen.
 


In the first quarter, Tish Blackwood started off the scoring with a good turnaround jumper, from Taeya Steinauer. After that, the Penmen scored back-to-back points, to take a 4-2 lead before Jillian Martin hit a three-pointer, from Taeya Steinauer, to take a 5-4 lead. Rheyna Steinauer scored four points and put the Owls, up by four points. Southern New Hampshire stayed within reach and steadily, took a 15-10 lead. Once again, it was Rheyna Steinauer, who scored four more points, to get Southern Connecticut within a point of the Penmen lead of 15-14, heading into the second quarter.
 
In the second quarter, Jillian Martin tied up the game at 17-17, with a three-pointer. After that, Rheyna Steinauer dominated the floor, as she scored 11 points, in a 14-3 run for the Owls. She scored 16 out of the Owls' 24 points in the beginning of the quarter. The Penmen didn't go away as they went on an 8-0 run and took the lead back in their favor, 25-24, with a 1:50 to go in the first half. Taeya Steinauer recorded an impressive steal and a fast break layup, to take the lead back, 26-24. Southern New Hampshire scored again, to tie the game before Taeya Steinauer hit a three-pointer, in the corner to put the Owls, up by three. However, with seconds ticking down, the Penmen got an and-one, to go up 30-29, going into halftime.
 
In the third quarter, Taeya Steinauer scored the first points of the quarter, with a good and-one to put the Owls up, 31-30. Nonetheless, both teams traded points back and forth throughout the quarter. Jillian Martin hit a good jumper, and Rheyna Steinauer made two free-throws, to bring Southern Connecticut's' lead to four points. Defense came up big for both the Owls and the Penmen until Southern New Hampshire ended the quarter on a 5-0 run with a lead of 39-38 over Southern Connecticut.
 
In the fourth quarter, Tish Blackwood and Ally Sentance started the Owls off with a 4-0 run, to open the final 10 minutes of play. Nevertheless, Southern New Hampshire continued to stay with them as they got within one of the Owls. Taeya Steinauer and Rheyna Steinauer made key baskets to add to the Southern Connecticut advantage. Then, Ally Sentance hit a big three-pointer to put the Owls, up by six. The Penmen responded with a made layup, but Jillian Martin hit two free-throws from the line, to extend the lead to six again. Sentance hit two free-throws, to seal the 55-47 Owls' victory over the Penmen and extended their win streak to 11 games in a row.
 
The Owls will travel to Assumption University on Tuesday, February 10 for an NE10 matchup at 5:30 pm in Worcester, Mass. Southern will return home to the James Moore Field House for an NE10 matchup on Saturday, February 14 at 1:30 pm against American International.

The afternoon tips off with the Women's Basketball game at 1:30 PM, followed by the Men's Basketball game at 3:30 PM. Fans attending either (or both!) games can enjoy the excitement of competition alongside a dynamic drag performance that brings energy, joy, and visibility to the celebration.
