SCSU Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Pace University

Southern Connecticut State University Softball split a Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader against Pace University on Friday April 17. The Owls move to 17-17 overall and 10-14 in the NE10, while the Setters move to 16-22 overall and 8-16 in the NE10.

Kate Nickerson and Giselle DeLutri started for the Owls in the circle. In game one, Nickerson tossed four innings allowing two runs on six hits, while striking out three. DeLutri got the start for game two and went the distance as she tossed 8.1 innings and allowed six runs, five of which were earned, on 12 hits while striking out five. DeLutri also pitched in relief in game one as she threw one inning allowing no runs on two hits and struck out two. Along with DeLutri, Moira Collins saw a relief appearance and went two innings allowing one run on one hit and struck out two.

 Offensively for the Owls, Gianna Iaquinto led the way with three hits and four RBI across both games. Brianna Pearson had four hits and three RBI and Sophia Angiolini and Izzy Ingersoll both had three hits.

Game 1: SCSU 9, Pace 3
In game one, Kate Nickerson got the start in the circle for the Owls, where she tossed four innings allowing two runs on six hits while striking out three. In relief Moira Collins tossed two innings giving up one unearned run on one hit, while striking out two. To follow Collins, Giselle DeLutri came in and shut the door as she tossed one inning, allowing no runs on two hits with two strikeouts.
              
Offensively for the Owls, Gianna Iaquinto led the way as she went 3-for-5 with a double, a triple and 3 RBI. Along with Iaquinto, Brianna Pearson also had three RBI and went 2-for-3.
              
The Owls came into the game hot, when in the first inning Gianna Iaquinto smacked a triple to right field. From there, Pearson flew out to right field which allowed Iaquinto to tag up and give the Owls a 1-0 lead.
              
After Pace answered in the bottom of the second inning, the Owls offense responded with two runs of their own in the top of the third. The inning began with a walk by Izzy Ingersoll. From there, it was Iaquinto again, this time on a double to right field, driving in Ingersoll to expand the lead to 2-0. After a ground out by Pearson, Karley Austin put the ball in play causing a field error by the shortstop that allowed Iaquinto to score and gave the Owls a 3-1 lead.
              
In the bottom of the third, the Setters added another run to cut the lead back down to one at 3-2.
              
After surrendering a run in the third, the Owls added that run right back in the 4th inning. The inning began with a walk by Christina DeNovellis and Cheyenne LaTouche getting hit by a pitch. With runners on first and second base, Ingersoll singled up the middle, which scored DeNovellis to give the Owls a 4-2 lead.
              
After a quiet 5th inning, the Owls offense exploded in the sixth inning scoring five runs on four hits and two errors. The inning began with a walk by DeNovellis and back-to-back singles by Nadia Cestari and Ingersoll. With the bases loaded, Iaquinto doubled to score both Cestari and DeNovellis and extend the Owls lead to 6-2. That was not the last of the Owls offense for the inning, as Pearson singled to left field which allowed Iaquinto and Ingersoll to score and the Owls to take an 8-2 lead. After a groundout by Austin, Sophia Angiolini added more onto the lead when she reached first on an error by the shortstop, which allowed Pearson to score and gave the Owls a 9-2 lead.
              
In the bottom of the 6th inning, Pace began to mount a comeback, but they only scored one run on one hit and an error to cut the lead down to 9-3. After a quiet seventh inning, due to strong pitching by DeLutri, the Owls took game one by a score of 9-3.
 
Game 2: Pace 6, SCSU 5 (9 inn.)
 In game two, Giselle DeLutri got the start for the Owls and wen the distance. DeLutri allowed six runs on 12 hits while striking out five. Offensively for the Owls, Olivia Young led the way going 1-for-2 with two RBI. Along with Young, three other Owls had an RBI in Iaquinto, Austin and Angiolini.

After a quiet first inning, the Owls scored the first runs of the game in the 2nd inning when they scored two runs. The inning began with a leadoff single by Austin and then a steal. After a fly out by Angiolini, LaTouche grounded into a fielders choice, which allowed Austin to advance to third. With Austin and LaTouche both on base, Olivia Young doubled scoring both runners for a 2-0 lead.
              
After a quiet 3rd inning, Pace tied the game in the bottom of the 4th inning Pace tied the game at 2-2 scoring two runs on two hits.
              
In the 5th inning, the Owls added another run. The inning began with Samantha LaFemina reaching second base on an error by the first baseman. Following a groundout by Ingersoll, that allowed LaFemina to advance to third, the Owls got more help from another defensive miscue. Iaquinto reached first on a fielding error by the second baseman, which scored LaFemina to give the Owls a 3-2 lead. That would not be the last of the offense for the inning, as Pearson smacked a double to right field, which moved Iaquinto to third base. With two runners in scoring position, Austin singled which scored Iaquinto to give the Owls a 4-2 lead. After Austin, Angiolini singled which scored Pearson to give the Owls a 5-2 lead.
              
After three runs by the Owls, the Setters answered with two of their own in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 5-4. Along with the runs the Setters scored in the fifth, they scored another in the bottom of the 6th to tie the game at 5-5.
              
The game remained tied after the 7th inning and went into extra innings. After a scoreless inning from Giselle DeLutri on the mound, Pace found themselves in a bases loaded situation in the bottom of the 9th inning. From there, the Setters singled to walk it off and take a 6-5 win.
              
Southern Connecticut is back-in-action on Saturday April 18 as they travel to Pleasantville, N.Y. to take on the Pace University Setters in a Northeast 10 conference doubleheader with games beginning at noon.
