SCSU Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Pace University

Pleasantville, N.Y.-- Southern Connecticut State University Softball split a Northeast 10 Conference doubleheader against Pace University on Saturday April 18. The Owls move to an even 18-18 overall and 11-15 in the NE10, while the Setters move to 17-23 overall and 9-17 in the NE10. 

Olivia Young and Giselle DeLutri both had starts in the circle for the Owls. In game one, Young went four innings and allowed four runs on five hits, while striking out four. In game two, Giselle DeLutri went the distance and tossed seven innings allowing one run on five hits while striking out 11. In relief for the Owls in game one, Moira Collins went two innings and allowed two runs on three hits. 

Offensively for the Owls, Gianna Iaquinto led the way with three RBI and two home runs and Sophia Angiolini had two RBI. Cheyenne LaTouche and Angiolini each had four hits across both game. 

Game 1: Pace 6, SCSU 5

In game one, Olivia Young got the start and went four innings and allowed four runs on five hits, while striking out four. In relief, Moira Collins went two innings and allowed two runs on three hits. Offensively for the Owls Cheyenne LaTouche led the way going 4-for-4 with an RBI and Sophia Angiolini had two RBI. 

The Owls offense started off hot when they scored their first run of the game in the 1st inning. The offense for the inning began when Brianna Pearson reached base on a fielders choice. From there, Karley Austin singled moving Pearson into scoring position. After Austin, Angiolini singled which drove in Pearson to give the Owls a 1-0 lead. 

In the 2nd inning, the Owls added another run to their lead. The inning began with a single and stolen base by LaTouche. Following a pop out by Christina DeNovellis, Young doubled which scored LaTouche which expanded the Owls lead to 2-0. 

In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Pace answered with two runs on three hits to tie the game at 2-2. 

After letting up two runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning, the Owls responded in the 3rd inning, with three runs of their own. The inning began with a single by Pearson. Following a bunt by Austin to advance Pearson into scoring position, Angiolini singled to give the Owls the lead back and make the score 3-2. The Owls added another run on a double to left field by LaTouche which scored Angiolini to bring the lead up to 4-2. The Owls last run of the inning came on a single by DeNovellis, which drove in LaTouche to give the Owls a 5-2 lead. 

The 3rd inning would be the last of the Owls offense. After a quiet fourth inning, Pace scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth and held on for the 6-5 win. 

Game 2: SCSU 3, Pace 1

In game two, Giselle DeLutri got the start in the circle and pitched a gem as she went the distance and allowed one run on five hits, while striking out 11. This start was DeLutri's second start of the season where she recorded double digit strikeouts and now has 99 on the season, which leads the Owls. Offensively for the Owls, Iaquinto led the way going 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. Along with Iaquinto, Austin and Angiolini each had two hits. 

The Owls offense once again scored in the first inning, when Iaquinto sent a solo home run to left center, which gave the Owls a 1-0 lead. 

After a quiet 2nd and 3rd inning, Pace answered with a run in the bottom of the 4th inning, to tie the game at 1-1. 

After allowing a run in the bottom of the 4th inning, the Owls answered in the top of the 5th inning. The offense for the inning began with a single by Gabrielle Senerchia. Senerchia's single was the first hit of her Owls career. With Senerchia on first, Iaquinto smacked a ball into the right field gap for an inside the park home run to give the Owls a 3-1 lead. Iaquinto's two home runs, bring her to four on the season, which ties her for fifth in the NE10. 

Iaquinto's home run would be the last of the offense for the game, as they would shut out Pace in the remaining two innings and take a 3-1 win. 

Southern Connecticut is back-in-action on Wednesday April 22 when they host Adelphi University in a Northeast 10 conference doubleheader beginning at 2:30pm at the Pelz Field.
