Spencer Chard Hits Walk-Off Home Run As SCSU Baseball Beats AIC, 9-8

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut baseball scored seven runs in its final at-bat to come-from-behind and defeat American International, 9-8 on a walk-off home run by Spencer Chard, in a Northeast-10 Conference match up at The Ballpark at SCSU. With the win, Southern improved to 8-19 overall and 5-13 in the NE10 while AIC dropped to 10-20 overall and 6-12 in conference play.

Chard delivered the deciding blow – a three-run homer with the Owls trailing by two runs in the bottom of the 9th inning. Before Chard's walk-off game-winner, Brennan Staubley put a bow on a 3-for-5 day with a two-run single that brought Chard to the dish as the winning run. Chard grinded out an at-bat before blasting a three-run shot on full count to turn the Owls' day around.

Southern fell behind early when AIC pushed across three runs in the 2nd and another three in the 3rd to take a 6-0 lead. In the 4th, Devin Pelletier singled before Staubley connected on a two-out, two-run dinger to get the Owls on the board. On the mound, Harry Roy and Jake O'Connor both pitched two shutout innings, giving up a combined three hits through the 7th inning.

Trailing 6-2, the Owls gave up two more runs in the top of the 8th inning. Wes Keayes, making his second collegiate appearance and first since March 14th, pitched a perfect 9th – with two strikeouts – to send the game to the bottom of the 9th with SCSU trailing, 8-2.

Ryan Fedeli and pinch-hitter Augie Albert led off the inning with back-to-back base hits before Ziad Vohra reached on an error to load the bases. Nick Karras' ground ball to short scored Fedeli, with Vohra retired at second. Bam Talavera then brought Albert home with a sacrifice fly to make it 8-4. Pelletier and Jake Chacho then walked to load the bases before Staubley's single up the middle scored Karras and Pelletier to make it 8-6.

After a pitching change, Chard came to the plate and delivered his second home run of the season to walk the Owls off with a win.

Southern is back in action this weekend when it hosts Adelphi for a four-game NE10 series on Saturday, Apr. 11 and Sunday, Apr. 12 for a pair of doubleheaders set for a 12 p.m. start at The Ballpark at SCSU in New Haven, Conn.
