NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut baseball split the doubleheader with Adelphi, as the Panthers took Game One, 18-2 and the Owls took the second game, 9-3. With the win in the second game,
Tim Shea won his 600th career game. The Panthers moved to an overall record of 16-13 and an NE10 record of 12-8. The Owls moved to an overall record of 9-20 and an NE10 record of 4-15.
Alex Cappellucci led the Owls with a total of four RBI for the day.
Devin Pelletier had three RBI in the second game. Jake Chaco and
Bam Talavera had a team-best of three hits, while Talavera and
Brennan Staubley scored two runs against the Panthers.
Shea was the first SCSU head coach - across all sports - to win 500 career games and ultimately, the first to win 600. In career wins, Shea ranks 34th among 251 NCAA Division II active coaches in career wins
GAME ONE:
The Adelphi offense worked steadily throughout the first three innings, as they built an eight-run lead. The Owls got on the board with two runs in the sixth inning, with a sacrifice fly by
Brennan Staubley, that brought
Nick Karras home and a single from
Alex Cappellucci, that brought
Devin Pelletier across home plate. However, in the eighth and ninth inning, the Panthers offense exploded as they added seven runs to their total. Adelphi took the first game, 18-2 over Southern.
GAME TWO:
The Panthers took an early 2-0 lead, in the second inning over the Owls. In the top of the fourth inning, Adelphi added another run, to extend their advantage to three. Nonetheless, in the bottom of the fourth, the Owls momentum started with a single from
Matt Scalia, which allowed
Brennan Staubley, to come home for the first run of the game.
In the fifth,
Bam Talavera gave a spark to the offense of Southern as he recorded a hit down the middle. Then,
Devin Pelletier hit a single to right field, to bring Talavera home. The Owls got the bases loaded with a single from Jake Chaco and a walk from
Brennan Staubley. Scalia was hit by a pitch, as it brought Pelletier home, to tie the game at 3-3. After that,
Alex Cappellucci hit a huge triple into center field and brought three runs home for the first lead of the game.
Ryan Fideli recorded a sacrifice bunt, to bring Cappellucci home, for the seventh run.
Then,
Zaid Vohra got walked before
Bam Talavera had his second hit of the inning.
Devin Pelletier singled to right field and brought Talavera and Vohra home, as the Owls extended their lead to 9-3.
Pitcher
Cody Heselton got the win on the mound. In addition,
Johnny O'Brien and Heselton came up huge for the Owls, as they struck out three and allowed no hits or runs in the last two innings of play. Southern Connecticut held on to win the second game of the day, 9-3.
The Owls will return to the Ballpark on Sunday, April 12 for the last two games of the series against Adelphi with first pitch at 12 pm.
