SCSU Baseball Splits NE10 Doubleheader With Assumption

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut State University baseball wrapped up the 2026 season with a split against Assumption, winning the first game, 2-0, before falling 13-6 in the nightcap. With the split, the Owls finish the year at 17-28 overall and 13-22 in the Northeast 10.

Bam Talavera celebrated Senior Day with a 5-for-8 showing in the doubleheader. In the second game, Talavera was 4-for-5 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Colin Blake pitched a complete game, four-hit shutout in the first game that saw the senior throw just 67 pitches. Matt Scalia and Spencer Chard also had three hits for the day.

GAME 1: SCSU 2, Assumption 0
Blake was masterful on the mound as the Greyhounds didn't have a runner past second base all day. Blake also retired the last nine batters he faced and was helped in the 7th by a highlight-reel catch by Ryan Fedeli. The Owls third baseman spied a ball heading out of play and darted toward the Owls dugout in pursuit. Finding the guardrail in front of the dugout, Fedeli leaned over and made a snow-cone catch for the second out of the inning.

Both of the Owls' runs came in the 5th inning. Scalia led off with a single to center before Chard doubled down the left field line to move Scalia to third. Fedeli then hit a ground ball to short and beat the throw to the bag to score Scalia and give the Owls a 1-0 lead, with Chard moving to third. After Fedeli stole second, Alex Cappellucci hit a fly ball to right that scored Chard and gave the Owls and Blake all the support they needed.

GAME 2: Assumption 13, SCSU 6
Talavera's four-hit outing, as well as a pair of hits from Cappellucci, and a pair of RBIs from Fedeli and Connor Powell generated all of the Owls' offense for the day. Owls starter Jaylen Cruz was chased after three innings after the Greyhounds scored six runs – only one of which was earned – on four hits. Owen Sotero took the hard-luck loss after pitching well over 5 1/3 to the tune of two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.

Assumption used a five-run 2nd inning to take an early lead. In the 3rd, Powell reached on an error before going to third on Cappellucci's double. The next two batters were retired before Brennan Staubley walked to load the bases. Talavera then singled to short, scoring Powell and Cappellucci and making it 5-2. Assumption scored again in the 4th to take a 6-2 lead and again in the 6th to make it 7-2.

In the bottom of the 6th, Talavera lined a one-out singled up the middle and then came around to score after the next three batters walked. Chard then scored on a wild pitch to pull the Owls within three runs, 7-4. In the 8th, Chard led off with a single to center and Scalia was hit by a pitch. Fedeli's come-backer to the mound moved both runners into scoring position before Powell's sacrifice fly scored Chard and made it 7-5. The Owls pulled within a run on Cappellucci's RBI single that scored Scalia. In the 9th, Assumption scored six runs on six hits to pull away with the 13-6 win. Talavera doubled in the bottom half of the inning and exited the game to a standing ovation after his final collegiate at-bat.
