SCSU Volleyball Splits Final Two Matches at Rollins Tournament

WINTER PARK, Fla. - Southern Connecticut women's volleyball split a pair of matches on Saturday at Warden Arena, defeating Ursuline, 3-0, before falling to host Rollins, 3-1. The two matches marked the third and fourth games of the season for the Owls, who finish the opening weekend of the season with a 3-1 overall record.

Kerrigan Habing totaled 24 kills to lead the team, with freshman Marisabelle Sias totaling 22. Kimi Mitchell recorded 50 assists, 12 kills and 14 digs between the two matches, while Sarah Henault totaled 21 digs and three service aces. Sydney Bennett added 13 kills and five blocks on the day.

Southern took the first set against Ursuline, 25-16, after jumping out to an early lead. The Owls led 8-4 before continuing to build their advantage, taking a 17-10 lead. Southern closed the set with a 7-2 run to take a 1-0 lead. Sias led the way with four kills in the opening frame, while Sydney Bennett added two kills.

The second set featured a back-and-forth battle between the two teams, with Southern eventually earning a 25-23 victory. The Owls took an early lead before Ursuline battled back to make it a one-point game. Southern maintained its composure throughout the remainder of the set, closing out the frame to take a 2-0 lead.

Southern closed out the sweep with a 25-17 victory in the third set. The Owls jumped out to a 7-3 lead before Ursuline battled back to tie the score at 8-8. Southern responded with a 5-0 run to take a 13-8 lead and continued to control the remainder of the set. The Owls extended their advantage to 19-12 before closing out the match, 25-17. Sias recorded five kills in the final set, while Southern hit .394 as a team in the frame.

Southern then faced tournament host Rollins in its fourth match of the season. The Owls took the opening set, 25-23, after overcoming a late Rollins run. Southern led 23-18 before Rollins rallied to tie the set at 23-23. The Owls answered with the final two points, including a kill from Sias, to take a 1-0 lead.

Rollins responded in the second set, earning a 25-19 victory to even the match at 1-1. Southern held a 3-2 advantage early before Rollins took control and eventually built a 15-10 lead. The Owls continued to battle, pulling within four at 20-16, but Rollins closed out the set with a 5-3 run to even the match.

The third set remained close throughout, with Rollins eventually taking a 25-23 victory. Southern held a 20-17 advantage late in the frame before Rollins rallied to tie the score at 23-23. The Owls regained a 24-23 lead, but Rollins scored the final two points to take the set and move ahead 2-1.

Rollins closed out the match with a 25-17 victory in the fourth set. The Owls and Tars battled through the early stages of the frame before Rollins began to pull away. Southern trailed 20-13 late in the set before Rollins closed out the match, 25-17.

Southern Connecticut finishes the opening weekend of the season with a 3-1 overall record, and will travel back north for their next match against Holy Family at home on September 2nd.
