SCSU Volleyball Sweeps Holy Family In Home Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Southern Connecticut State University volleyball used a come-from-behind win in the opening set to sweep Holy Family, 3-0, at Pelz Gymnasium. The Owls won 29-27, 25-20, 25-20 to improve to 4-1 on the season in front of the Pelz Gymnasium fans in Southern's 2026 Home Opener. Holy Family dropped to 0-1.

Kerrigan Habing led Southern with 13 kills on .314 hitting, adding two aces and two block assists for a team-high 16 points. Maria Martinez added seven kills at .357 with five total blocks, including one solo, for 10 points. Sydney Bennett also finished with seven kills and a team-best five block assists.Setter Kimi Mitchell directed the offense with 36 assists and added four kills on .308 hitting, five digs and an ace. Libero Sarah Henault anchored the back row with a match-high 16 digs.



Southern hit .282 for the match with 43 kills against just 12 errors, while holding Holy Family, a 2025 NCAA Division II Tournament participant, to .130 hitting with 35 kills and 20 errors. The Owls also held advantages in assists, 41-34, blocks, 7-4, and digs, 41-38.

Southern had to grind out the opener. Holy Family led 24-20 late in Set 1 after back-to-back points from Kalia Espenlaub and a block, but the Owls reeled off four straight to force extra points. Martinez and Habing tied it with consecutive kills, and after a trade of points, Bennett gave Southern the lead with a kill and Habing closed it with an ace for the 29-27 win. Southern hit .386 in the first set with 21 kills.

The second set turned on a long service run. With Holy Family ahead 3-1, Alyssa Ferreira stepped to the line and served six straight points. Ferreira recorded two aces in the run and forced three Tiger attack errors, including a block by Bennett and Habing, to flip a 3-1 deficit into a 9-3 lead. Southern never trailed again.

Holy Family cut it to 20-18 late after two aces from Abby Bachman, but Habing answered with a kill and Martinez and Binning added kills to close out the 25-20 victory. Southern hit .265 in the set while limiting the Tigers to .143.

In the third, Southern jumped to a 7-3 lead behind Habing, who had two kills and an ace in the early stretch. Holy Family stayed within two after a service ace from Rosslyn Briggs made it 10-8, but Southern responded with a 5-0 run. Jaiden Binning had two kills in the spurt and Martinez added a block to make it 15-9.

Holy Family's Mackenzie Layton, who led all players with 15 kills and 11 digs, kept the Tigers close with three late kills, but Bennett put the match away with a kill off Mitchell's 36th assist for the 25-20 final.
Southern finished with five aces to Holy Family's eight, overcoming 10 service errors to secure its fourth straight win.

Southern is back in action at Pelz Gymnasium with a tri-match against Queens and Franklin Pierce on Saturday, Sept. 5. The Owls and Queens link up at 10 a.m. followed by Queens against Franklin Pierce at 12 p.m. Southern and Franklin Pierce will then face each other at 2 p.m. in a non-conference match.
