SCSU Field Hockey Downs Mercy, 5-1, In Home Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Keana Criscuolo scored twice and added an assist to lead Southern Connecticut State University field hockey to a 5-1 win over Mercy University on Tuesday night at Jess Dow Field. Isabella Sharp-Senior added a goal and an assist for a three-point night, while Kate Salvador and Bridget Andros each found the net for the first time this season.

 The Owls improved to 1-2 on the season with their first win of the season, while Mercy dropped to 0-3. Southern wasted no time setting the tone. Criscuolo opened the scoring just 50 seconds into the contest for her first goal of the season, giving Southern a 1-0 lead before Mercy had attempted a shot.



After controlling the opening quarter with an 11-1 advantage in shots and seven penalty corners, the Owls broke through again late in the second. Kate Salvador doubled the lead at the 21:56 mark with her first goal of the year, and Criscuolo struck again with 13 seconds left in the half to make it 3-0. The senior forward finished the night with nine shots, five on goal, and factored into three of Southern's five goals.

Mercy responded quickly after the break. Charlotte Sabert cut the deficit to 3-1 at 31:34 of the third quarter with her first goal of the season, briefly shifting momentum to the Mavericks.

Southern answered six minutes later when freshman Isabella Sharp-Senior set up Bridget Andros at 37:22 for Andros' first goal of the season, restoring a three-goal cushion heading into the final quarter.

The Owls' defense, led by goalkeeper Lyndsay Troisi, held firm as Mercy pressed late. Mercy generated eight shots and five penalty corners in the fourth quarter alone, but Troisi made three of her six saves in the final 15 minutes to keep the Mavericks off the board. Troisi played all 60 minutes in the win.

Southern closed the scoring with just under a minute remaining. Criscuolo found Sharp-Senior at 59:02 for her second goal of the season to cap the 5-1 final.

Southern outshot Mercy 33-15 and held a 19-7 edge in shots on goal. The Owls also earned 14 penalty corners to Mercy's eight.

Andros and Sharp-Senior each finished with a goal and came off the bench to spark the attack, while Avery Vaccaro and Lindsey Onofrio combined for 12 shots and controlled possession on corners. Onofrio recorded nine shots, five on frame, while Vaccaro added three shots on goal and inserted on 12 of Southern's 14 corners.

Southern, which held Mercy to one shot in the first quarter, limited the Mavericks to just three shots through the first 30 minutes before withstanding a late push.

The Owls return to action this weekend when they continue non-conference play against Molloy on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 12 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
