SCSU Field Hockey Falls To No. 2 Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Southern Connecticut field hockey lost to No. 2 Kutztown, 9-0, in a non-conference matchup in Kutztown, Pa. 



Southern Connecticut (0-2) was held without a shot by the Golden Bears but stayed competitive in the cage behind a combined 23-save effort from its two goalkeepers. Rachel Miller started for the Owls and made nine saves in 30 minutes. Lyndsay Troisi took over at halftime and turned away 14 shots in 30 minutes, including 10 saves in the fourth quarter alone when Kutztown put 19 shots up.

Miller and Troisi combined for the second-highest save total by an SCSU duo in the last two seasons. The tandem faced 32 shots on goal. Troisi's 14 saves marked the most by an SCSU goalkeeper in a single half this season. Miller's nine stops came against a first-half barrage that included 17 shots and 12 corners for Kutztown.

Kutztown (3-0), ranked second in the NFHCA Division II poll, scored twice in the first quarter and added four more in the second to build a 6-0 halftime lead. The Golden Bears tacked on one goal in the third and two in the fourth.

Southern's lone penalty corner came at 33:44 of the third quarter off the stick of Avery Vaccaro, the Owls' best look of the day.

Despite the scoreline, Southern showed resilience defensively. The Owls blocked four shots, cleared multiple corners late, and held Kutztown scoreless for more than 20 minutes bridging the third and fourth quarters before the Golden Bears broke through again at 52:51.

The Owls return home to host Mercy for their home opener at Jess Dow Field on Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m.
