SCSU Field Hockey Rolls To 6-1 Win Against Molloy

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Keana Criscuolo and Kaiya Mercier each scored twice and the Southern Connecticut State University field hockey team dominated from start to finish in a 6-1 victory over Molloy University at Jess Dow Field.

Southern Connecticut improved to 2-2 on the season with the win. Molloy dropped to 0-1.



Criscuolo opened the scoring in the first quarter and added her team-leading fourth goal of the season later in the period, while Mercier finished with two goals and three assists to power an Owls offense that outshot Molloy 21-1 and put 17 shots on goal.

Southern wasted little time establishing control. The Owls earned four penalty corners in the first quarter and generated seven shots.

The breakthrough came at the 9:42 mark. Mercier found Criscuolo in front for her first goal of the day to give Southern a 1-0 lead. Just under two minutes later, at 11:20, Criscuolo struck again, this time off a feed from Kate Salvador, to make it 2-0. It was Criscuolo's fourth goal in her last two games.

Southern extended the lead in the second quarter. After a save by Molloy goalkeeper Kayla Monique Lipscomb on a Mercier attempt, the Owls earned a corner and converted. Ruby Webb scored at 20:31 on an assist from Mercier for her first goal of the season to push the lead to 3-0.

Molloy answered less than three minutes later to cut into the deficit. Samantha Naples set up Katie Ogurick at 23:40 for the Lions' lone shot and goal of the game. The goal was Ogurick's first of the season.

Mercier took over in the third quarter. At 38:48, Criscuolo returned the favor and assisted Mercier for her second goal of the season. Less than two minutes later, at 40:02, the same connection produced another goal, with Criscuolo assisting Mercier again for her third of the year and a 5-1 lead. Mercier's second goal came from an improbably angle, along the goalline, when she slid it between the keepers pads and found the far post.

Southern continued to pressure in the fourth. After a penalty corner by Webb at 49:22, Jess Nodell finished at 49:31 off an assist from Mercier for her first goal of the season to cap the scoring at 6-1.

The Owls held a 21-1 advantage in shots, 17-1 in shots on goal, and 13-5 in penalty corners. Southern's defense, anchored by Sofia Frassinelli, Grace Gile and goalkeeper Rachel Miller, did not allow a shot in the first, third or fourth quarters. Miller played all 60 minutes and allowed one goal.

Southern has now won its last two games by a combined score of 11-2. The Owls return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 15 when they travel to Sparkill, N.Y. to take on St. Thomas Aquinas at 4 p.m.
