Kaiya Mercier's Hat Trick Leads SCSU Field Hockey To 6-1 Win Against Dominican

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Kaiya Mercier scored three goals in a span of 80 seconds and Southern Connecticut State beat Dominican University of New York 6-1 in a non-conference matchup at Jess Dow Field.

Mercier's natural hat trick turned a 1-0 game into a rout and helped the Owls improve to 4-5 on the season. Dominican fell to 0-6. Kate Salvador, Ruby Webb and Keana Criscuolo all scored for the Owls and all three also had an assist. In goal, Rachel Miller improved to 2-1 with a four-save first half before Lyndsay Troisi played the final 30 minutes.

Southern Connecticut wasted little time establishing control. Just 2:04 into the match, Kate Salvador opened the scoring off a feed from Mercier for her third goal of the season. It was Salvador's first of two points on the day and gave the Owls a lead they never relinquished.

After a quiet end to the first quarter, Southern Connecticut erupted in the second.

Mercier scored less than three minutes into the second quarter at the 17:51 mark, finishing a pass from Ruby Webb for her fifth goal of the year. Fifty-five seconds later, Mercier struck again, unassisted, to make it 3-0. At 19:11, she completed the hat trick — her third goal in 1 minute, 20 seconds — pushing the lead to 4-0. Mercier now has seven goals on the season. She finished with three shots, all on goal, plus an assist.

The Owls weren't done in the half. Webb, who assisted on Mercier's first goal, made it 5-0 at 23:30, cleaning up a sequence that included saved shots from Webb and Keana Criscuolo. Criscuolo earned the assist on the play, her first point of the afternoon.

Southern Connecticut outshot Dominican 9-7 through two quarters and led 5-0 at the break despite Dominican generating three penalty corners and several quality looks. Rachel Miller made four saves in the first 30 minutes for SCSU, including stops on Rosa Duivenvoorden and Bodille Snijder.

Dominican broke through early in the third. Annabelle Docksteader scored her first goal of the season at 34:32 off an assist from Aileen Barajas to cut the deficit to 5-1. It was one of eight shots on goal for the Chargers on the day.

The Owls' defense tightened after that. Lyndsay Troisi entered at halftime and made three saves over the final 30 minutes, including two stops on Barajas, who led all players with four shots and three on goal.

Criscuolo added the final marker with 3:28 remaining in regulation. Salvador returned the favor from the first goal, assisting Criscuolo for her team-leading 11th goal of the season to make it 6-1.

Southern Connecticut finished with a 14-12 edge in shots and an 11-8 advantage in shots on goal. The Owls had six penalty corners to Dominican's five. SCSU goalkeepers combined for seven saves — Miller with four in 30 minutes and Troisi with three in 30 minutes. Costello made five saves in 41:14 for Dominican after Pool started.

Southern is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 3 when it hosts American International at 1 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
