SCSU Football Drops Season Opener At Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Southern Connecticut State University football couldn't overcome a fast start by Wagner in its season opener at Wagner, falling 31-7 at Hameline Field at Wagner College Stadium.

The Owls (0-1) trailed 24-0 at halftime after Wagner quarterback Benjamin Newman threw three first-half touchdown passes. Southern responded with a strong defensive effort in the second half and got on the board in the fourth quarter on a 3-yard touchdown run by quarterback Brandon Jorgensen.



Southern's defense tightened after the break. The Owls held Wagner scoreless in the third quarter and forced the Seahawks to punt twice after allowing 22 first downs and 409 total yards for the game.
The offense broke through early in the fourth. Jorgensen engineered a 7-play, 60-yard drive, capping it himself with a 3-yard run at 12:00. Daniel Benzi added the extra point to cut it to 24-7. It was Jorgensen's first rushing touchdown of the season.

Wagner answered with a 6-play, 55-yard drive, finished by a 29-yard touchdown run from Matt Morad at 3:47 to set the final at 31-7.

Jorgensen finished 13-for-21 for 118 yards through the air with no interceptions, despite being sacked four times. He also led the Owls with 11 rushing attempts and scored the lone touchdown.
Andres Perez was his top target with six receptions for 66 yards, including a long of 37. Seth Westover added three catches for 39 yards. On the ground, John Amaning carried 16 times for 36 yards, while Anthony Rudiman added 12 yards on two carries.

Defensively, Southern was led by Jordan Eli with 12 total tackles, including six solo and one tackle for loss. Tyler Coard added nine tackles, while Alex Perez had eight. RJ Faessler had six tackles, two for loss, including a 7-yard sack, and Darius Mills added a 4-yard sack. Randy Mones recovered a fumble.

Special teams kept Southern in the field position battle early despite the score. Kyle Pinto punted 10 times for 382 yards, averaging 38.2 yards per punt with a long of 74 and two inside the 20. Brayson Cornick had two kickoff returns for 44 yards.

Southern held Wagner to 6-for-16 on third down, and was a perfect 1-for-1 in the red zone. The Owls committed five penalties for 26 yards and turned the ball over once on three fumbles.

The loss dropped Southern to 0-1 to open the 2026 season. The Owls will look to regroup when they host American International for their home opener on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 5 p.m. at Jess Dow Field.
