NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Erika Pysh (Plainville, Conn.) of the gymnastics team and Karl Derbacher (North Branford, Conn.) of the baseball team have been named as Comcast/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Month for April.

Pysh closed her collegiate career in grand fashion at the 2008 USAG Collegiate Nationals. The event was held in Shreveport, La. from April 17-19.

Pysh captured First-Team All-America honors on the floor exercises and was a Second-Team All-American in both the All-Around and beam.

In addition, Pysh also earned a Special Recognition Award in honor of Mari-Roe Soper, the head coach at Cal-State Fullerton who tragically passed away on Sept. 11, 2001 while on the flight that crashed into the Pentagon. The award recognizes an outstanding gymnast who personifies the qualities that a coach would like to have in a student-athlete, puts team goals as the priority, strives to make teammates better and is respected as a student-athlete and a person.

Derbacher powered the Owls to a 19-4 record in the month of April, including a 13-game winning streak to close the month.

He suited up in all 23 games for the Owls and batted .402 with 20 runs batted in from his No. 3 spot in the batting order. Derbacher posted a .491 on-base percentage and a .522 slugging percentage. He also scored 18 runs in the month and added 11 stolen bases. Defensively, he did not commit an error over 38 chances.
