NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Suzane Pires (Sao Paulo, Brazil) of the women’s soccer team and junior John Moscatel (Lexington, Mass.) of the football team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Pires and the Owls tied in their game 1-1 in double overtime at Le Moyne on Wednesday. She then followed with a pair of goals in the shutout at St. Anselm (2-0), marking her fifth and sixth goals of season.
Moscatel amassed 201 all-purpose yards and scored a career-high four touchdowns. He also had 159 rushing yards on 17 carries along with two kickoff returns for 42 yards. Moscatel is currently No. 11 in the NCAA for all-purpose yards per game (187), No. 11 in rushing touchdowns (9) and No. 16 in scoring. For his efforts, he was named the Northeast-10 Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
