NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.) of the men's basketball team and freshman Shatajah Wattely (Uncasville, Conn.) of the women's indoor track and field team have been named the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Smith averaged 26.5 points as Southern Connecticut State University went 2-0. He led all scorers with 22 points during a home win over Stonehill on Jan. 22. The Owls' tri-captain added 31 points in a road victory at No. 21 Franklin Pierce on Jan. 25. Smith was also selected into the Northeast-10 Conference weekly honor roll for his effort in the Owls' victories last week.
Wattely broke the Southern Connecticut State University Indoor record for the 200 meter dash, finishing at 24.56 and placing eighth. Her time in the 200 meters was a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Championships.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University's 'Athlete of the Week' recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the 'Athlete of the Week' program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
