NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Jackie Beathea (Annandale, Va.) of the women’s basketball team and junior Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.) of the men’s basketball team have been named the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Beathea averaged 19.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game in a 2-0 week for the Owls. She tallied 25 points and seven rebounds in win over Merrimack and posted yet another double-double with 13 points and 12 boards against Assumption.
Smith, also named the Northeast-10/Spalding Co-Player of the Week, averaged 27.0 points, 5.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game in two wins. The Owls' tri-captain scored 28 points at Merrimack on Jan. 28 and 26 versus Assumption on Feb. 1.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
