NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Tylon Smith (Manchester, Conn.) of the men's basketball team and sophomore Nicole Pruchnik (Rochester, Mass.) of the women's gymnastics team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.
Smith was named to the All-East Regional First Team by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). He is in a stellar all-around campaign, averaging 19.0 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game. The team leader in assists was named the NCAA East Regional Most Outstanding Player as well as the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA East Regional.
Pruchnik helped the Owls tie for second at the ECAC Championships. The sophomore collected individual titles on the floor exercise (9.85) as well as on the beam (9.75). She was also named the Corvais ECAC Division II Gymnast of the Week.
The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University's 'Athlete of the Week' recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the 'Athlete of the Week' program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
