NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Alexandria Jurgens (Cornwall, N.Y.) of the volleyball team and sophomore Michael Cerisano (Newburgh, N.Y.) of the football team have been named as the Connecticut Army National Guard/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.

Jurgens posted three consecutive double-digit dig efforts for the Owls last week. She recorded eight kills and 12 digs against Concordia and followed that up with a double-double of 10 kills and 12 digs in a win over Holy Family. Jurgens added five kills and 13 digs against Dominican on Saturday.

Cerisano registered a team and career-high 16 tackles in Saturday’s win over Pace. That performance was the highest single-game tackle effort by an Owl since Chevar Rankins posted 16 stops against Merrimack in 2011. Cerisano also had 1.5 sacks in the contest.

The Connecticut Army National Guard is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Week’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Week’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
