NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Yvonne Perkins (Danbury, Conn.) of the women’s outdoor track and field team and junior Diwani Augustine (East Hartford, Conn.) of the men’s outdoor track and field team have been named as the Comcast/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Month for May.
Perkins capped off an outstanding senior season with a phenomenal month of May. She started the month by finishing in the top three in three separate field events at the Northeast-10 Conference Championships. Perkins won the discus and finished second in the shot put and third in the hammer throw.
The following weekend, Perkins captured the New England Championship in the shot put with a throw of 47 feet, 3 inches. In the process, she broke the SCSU school record by more than a foot.
Perkins went on to earn All-America laurels for the second time this year after finishing fifth at the NCAA Championships in late May.
Augustine helped the Owls win their seventh straight Northeast-10 Outdoor Championship – and 14th consecutive overall conference track title – on May 2.
He was named the Most Outstanding Performer of the Championships after finishing first in the triple jump, second in the long jump and fourth in the 400 intermediate hurdles. Augustine also ran a leg of the conference champion 4x100 relay squad.
He then captured Northeast-10 Field Athlete of the Week honors for the second week in a row after placing third in the triple jump and eighth in the long jump at the New England Championships.
Augustine capped the month by finishing 24th in the triple jump at the IC4A Championships. In that meet, he defeated competitors from the University of Connecticut, Villanova, Pittsburgh, Army and Temple.
For the second consecutive year, Comcast is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Month’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Month’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each month for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
