NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Juniors Destiney Coward (East Haven, Conn.) of the women’s indoor track and field team and Salim Lemond (Oxford, Conn.) of the men’s swimming and diving team have been named as the Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Week.

Coward broke a 22-year old school record in the weight throw with a toss of 18.53 meters at this weekend’s season-opening Elm City Challenge. That total was tops among collegiate competitors and also a NCAA provisional qualifying figure. Coward also finished third in the shot put with a distance of 11.74 meters.

Lemond captured Most Outstanding Diver honors as the Owls’ placed fourth at the all-division ECAC Winter Championships over the weekend. He claimed both the 1- and 3-meter diving events at the competition, topping a field that exclusively included Division I foes. Lemond scored a 255.05 on the 1-meter board and a 248.85 on the 3-meter board.
