NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Sarah Darst (Tampa, Fla.) of the gymnastics team and freshman Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) of the men’s basketball team have been named as the Comcast/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Month for January.
Darst helped the Owls to a 7-2 record during the month of January. She won the bars with a score of 9.65 and finished fourth on the floor exercise with a 9.5 as the Owls edged Brown and Springfield in their season opener. The following weekend, she tied for seventh on the bars in a quad-meet that included Division I programs New Hampshire and Brown. In the final competition of the month, she claimed first place on the bars with a score of 9.675 as the Owls defeated four teams at the Brockport Invitational.
Carberry continued to stake his claim as a Northeast-10 Conference Freshman of the Year candidate with a strong month of January. He averaged 16.9 points per game, which included three outings with 20 or more points and one 30-point showing. Carberry was named NE-10 Freshman of the Week on two occasions in January and was also named to the league’s weekly honor roll once.
For the second consecutive year, Comcast is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Month’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Month’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each month for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
