NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Sophomore Amanda Thomas (Oakville, Conn.) of the women’s swimming and diving team and senior Ryan Whitehead (Darien, Conn.) of the men’s indoor track and field team have been named as the Comcast/Southern Connecticut State University Athletes of the Month for January.
Thomas dominated in the pool during the month of January, as highlighted by 10 first place finishes in the team’s four meets. She collected six wins during a pair of meets against Marist and Connecticut College on Jan. 15-16 to earn Northeast-10 Conference Swimmer of the Week laurels. Thomas currently has registered six NCAA qualifying cuts and is tops in NCAA Division II in both the 200 individual medley and the 200 butterfly.
Whitehead enjoyed an outstanding month for the Owls, a stretch that culminated with the squad capturing the 2011 Metropolitan Conference Indoor Track and Field Championship. He finished second in the heptathlon at the event and set a new school record in the process. He is also currently seventh in Division II in the pole vault having cleared 15 feet, 11 inches at the Metropolitan Championships. That mark is a NCAA provisional qualifying standard.
For the third consecutive year, Comcast is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Month’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Month’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each month for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
