NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) of the softball team and senior Joseph Poulsen (Oxford, Conn.) of the men’s outdoor track and field team have been named as the Southern Connecticut State University/Comcast Athletes of the Month for April.
Bucko helped the Owls post an 18-7 mark in the month, which concluded with the club winning its first-ever Northeast-10 Conference regular season title. She batted .410 with 11 home runs and 20 runs batted in. She also scored a team-high 31 runs, had an on-base percentage of .500 and slugged .892 during the month.
Poulsen had a fine month for the Owls, highlighted by a new school record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. He also won the 10,000 meters at the Metropolitan Championships with a time of 31:49.70 and helped the Owls to a fourth place finish at the event. Later in the month, he became the first Owl in school history to run a sub-nine minute 3,000 meter steeplechase race with a mark of 8:58.08 at the Larry Ellis Invite at Princeton.
For the fourth consecutive year, Comcast is serving as the title sponsor of Southern Connecticut State University’s ‘Athlete of the Month’ recognition program. Initiated in September, 2007, the ‘Athlete of the Month’ program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each month for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
