NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Twice junior midfielder
Djordje Jankovic (Sabac, Serbia) assisted on goals which gave the No. 16 nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team a one-goal lead at Jess Dow Field on Wednesday night. However, both times Le Moyne College had the answer to force a 2-2 tie in the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both teams. With the tie, SCSU stands at 1-1-1 (0-0-1 NE-10) while Le Moyne sits at 2-0-1 (0-0-1 NE-10).
SCSU opened the scoring in just the seventh minute of the match. Jankovic (Sabac, Serbia) struck a free kick from about 25 yards out on the left side. The ball found the head of freshman forward
Mike Fraioli (Norwalk, Conn.) who beat Le Moyne goalkeeper Steve White with the header for the first goal of the match. The goal would be the first half's lone score as the Owls went into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead.
Le Moyne would draw even with a goal just over seven minutes into the second half. In the 53rd minute, Eric Macias took a corner kick from the right wing. Dragan Mlikota was able to get his head to the ball just outside the six-yard box on the left side of the net and deflect the ball behind SCSU sophomore goalkeeper
Joe Pilla (Watertown, Conn.) to tie the game at 1-1.
However, the tie would be short-lived, as SCSU re-gained the lead just 6:01 later. In the 59th minute, Jankovic would pick up his second assist of the evening, as he lofted a free kick from just over 20 yards out on the right side. The ball came down on the foot of junior defender
Ancil Farrier (Los Bajos, Trinidad) six yards in front of the goal, and he one-touched it into the net to give the Owls a 2-1 lead.
After trailing for much of the second half, Le Moyne once again drew even with a goal in the 77th minute. Once again, the goal came off a corner kick, this one taken by Steve Blackwell on the left side. He found Brandon Morse in the box, who in turn found the net to tie the match at 2-2.
Pilla made seven saves for SCSU on the evening, while White recorded five saves for Le Moyne.
The Owls return to action this weekend when they visit St. Anselm College in Manchester, N.H.
