EASTON, Mass. – Six different members of the Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team tallied one point each on Wednesday as the Owls defeated Stonehill 4-2 in Northeast-10 Conference play at Skyhawk Field. Junior midfielder
Marcelo Mena (New Haven, Conn.) tallied the game-winner early in the second half for SCSU, which improved to 4-2-2 (3-1-2 NE-10) with the victory. With the loss, Stonehill fell to 2-5-2 (0-3-0 NE-10).
Senior forward
Colin Jackson (Hartford, Conn.) opened the scoring in the 23rd minute off an assist from senior midfielder
Nick Duque (Naugatuck, Conn.). The goal was the third of the season for Jackson which tied him for the team lead.
Just over nine minutes later, sophomore defender Sean O'Brien (Guilford, Conn.) headed in a corner kick taken by sophomore midfielder
Michael DiBartolomeo (Wallingford, Conn.) for his first career goal and give SCSU a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. The Owls held a 7-1 shots advantage in the first half.
Less than five minutes into the second half, junior
Marcelo Mena (New Haven, Conn.) picked up his first career point with a header that gave the Owls a 3-0 lead in the 50th minute.
Less than seven minutes later, sophomore midfielder
Marino Crocco (North Haven, Conn.) notched his first career point as well when he scored to give SCSU a 4-0 lead in the 57th minute.
Stonehill would strike twice in the game's final 20 minutes to create the 4-2 final. Todd Shigo struck first off an assist from Steven Day in the 73rd minute. Then, in the 80th minute, Martin Earley scored an unassisted goal.
Senior goalkeeper
Brendan Lawless (Orleans, Mass.) did not face a shot in the opening 67:56 while earning the victory for SCSU. Sophomore
Joe Pilla (Watertown, Conn.) played the remaining 22:04 in net, made two saves and surrendered two goals. Brian Guerrini made four saves in net and took the loss for Stonehill before being removed at the 65:35 mark. Brandon McFarlane played the remaining 24:25 and did not face a shot.
SCSU finished with a 10-6 shots advantage over the full 90 minutes. The Owls also were awarded nine corner kicks to Stonehill's zero.
The Owls return to action on Saturday, September 22 when they return home to host Southern New Hampshire in a Northeast-10 Conference game. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Jess Dow Field in New Haven, Conn.
