NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior defender
Ancil Farrier (Los Bajos, Trinidad) scored on a penalty kick in the 79th minute to give the Southern Connecticut State University men's soccer team 1-1 tie with Dominican at Jess Dow Field on Tuesday night in a rematch of a 2006 NCAA Division II Northeast Regional Semifinal. The non-conference match was hotly contested throughout the 110 minutes, as the two clubs combined for 23 fouls. With the tie, SCSU's record goes to 5-2-3 (4-1-2 NE-10) while Dominican moves to 5-1-5 (3-0-1 CACC).
The two teams played a scoreless first half, with each team garnering one great scoring opportunity. In the 14th minute, junior midfielder
Tom Mattera (Norwalk, Conn.) lifted a pass over the back line of the Dominican defense where senior forward
Colin Jackson (Hartford, Conn.) ran it down. However, his line-drive shot was deflected up and over the net by Dominican goalkeeper Robert Kelly.
Later in the half, forward Joe Wright of the Chargers was sprung free on a breakaway of his own. Senior goalkeeper
Brendan Lawless (Orleans, Mass.) came out to challenge him, cut down the angle and made the save to preserve the scoreless tie heading into the halftime break. SCSU enjoyed a 10-5 shots advantage in the first half.
After another 25 scoreless minutes to start the second half, forward Johnny Arteaga struck for his eighth goal of the season in the 71st minute to give Dominican a 1-0 lead. As the ball was crossed in towards the net from the right side, Lawless made a move to pick it up. Some miscommunication followed and the goalkeeper collided with a member of his own defense, which allowed the ball to roll right to Arteaga who promptly deposited it in the empty cage.
The Owls would even things up just less than eight minutes later, in the 79th minute. Farrier was driving through the left side of the penalty area when he was hauled down by a Dominican defender and awarded a penalty kick. Farrier struck the penalty kick into the upper-left portion of the net, beyond the reach of a sprawling Kelly, to tie the score 1-1. Dominican outshot SCSU 8-4 in the second half which left the Owls with a 14-13 edge through 90 minutes.
The two overtime periods featured back-and-forth action with each team firing five shots over the two extra sessions. SCSU finished with a slim, 19-18 advantage in shots over the full 110 minutes.
Lawless made five saves in net for SCSU while Kelly made eight saves in front of the Dominican cage.
The Owls return to action on Saturday, September 29 when they travel to visit Bentley in a Northeast-10 Conference game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Waltham, Mass.
