NEW HAVEN, Conn. –
Gina Della Rose (Prospect, Conn.) scored the first goal of the game as Southern defeated Assumption College 2-1 on Wednesday night for Clinton, Conn. Youth Soccer Night at Jess Dow Field. With the win, the Owls improved their record to 6-3, 4-2 in Northeast-10 Conference play, while the Greyhounds dropped to 4-5-1, 2-3-1.
In the 17th minute of action,
Alison Ditolla (Trumbull, Conn.) collected her first assist of the season, when she found Della Rose at the top of the 18-yard box. Della Rose placed a shot into the upper right corner of the goal to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, after a weather delay of one hour, the Greyhounds scored a goal to tie the game at one. In the 74th minute, Kirsten Chirichetti found the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season.
Freshman
Jenna Mallico (Milford, Conn.) came through in the clutch for the Owls once again, as she scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute of play. Della Rose found a slashing Mallico in the penalty area, for her sixth goal of the season.
Katie DiDio (Vernon, Conn.) tallied four saves for her sixth win of the season for the Owls, as Molly Miller made seven saves in the losing effort for the Greyhounds.
For their next match, the Owls will travel to Manchester, N.H. for a conference match against the Penmen from Southern New Hampshire. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
