NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Junior
Katrina Cook (Westtown, N.Y.) scored the first goal of the game, as SCSU defeated AIC 3-0 on a rainy Tuesday night at Jess Dow Field. Southern prevailed in a physical soccer match that took place in very difficult playing conditions.
With the win, Southern improved its record of 9-4-2, 7-3-2 in Northeast-10 competition, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 7-9-1 overall, 3-8-1 in the league.
Both teams came out firing, as Southern controlled a slight 7-6 advantage in shots.
Katie DiDio (Vernon, Conn.) sparked the Owls in the 20th minute of action, when she made a great save denying Sarah Tomlinson of a goal. DiDio was able to tip a shot that was placed into the upper corner over the goal, preserving the 0-0 tie score.
Just 13 minutes later, Cook scored her second goal of the season off a cross from
Danielle MacMurray (Griswold, Conn.), giving the Owls a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
In the 58th minute, freshman
Jenna Mallico (Milford, Conn.) beat two AIC defenders and was fouled inside the box for a penalty kick. Junior
Nicole Burton (Warwick, N.Y.) capitalized on the free kick, extending the Owl lead to a two goal margin.
Nicole Reverberi (Massapequa, N.Y.) tacked on one more in the closing minutes of play, assisted by
Mara Primmer (Oneonta, N.Y.), finalizing a 3-0 shutout over AIC.
DiDio (Vernon, Conn.) recorded four saves in her seventh shutout of the season for the Owls, while Kara Potts tallied five saves in the losing effort for the Yellow Jackets.
For their next match, the Owls will travel to Manchester, N.H. for a conference match against St. Anselm's College. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
