Box Score

RINDGE, N.H. – Gina Della Rose (Prospect, Conn.) recorded her fifth goal of the season, however SCSU fell in a heartbreaking loss to the No. 1 seed Franklin Pierce, 2-1, on Thursday evening in Rindge, N.H. at Sodexho Field. With the defeat, the Owls concluded their season with an overall record of 12-5-2, while the Ravens live to see another day, advancing to the Northeast-10 Conference Finals against the College of Saint Rose set for Sunday, Nov. 9.

The Owls opened the scoring in the 20th minutes of action, when Northeast-10 Freshman of the Year, Jenna Mallico (Milford, Conn.) started a string of passes, leading to the first goal of the game. Mallico controlled the ball in the midfield and found Katrina Cook (Westtown, N.Y.) down the left side. Cook held off a Raven defender long enough to find a slashing Della Rose at the top of the 18-yard box. Della Rose slipped a shot into the bottom left corner of the goal for an early 1-0 Owl lead.

In the second half, the Owls continued to press the Ravens defense. Junior Danielle MacMurray (Griswold, Conn.) took a shot from just outside of the 18-yard box with 25 minutes left in the game that would have sealed the game. The shot was headed for the top right corner of the goal, but a leaping save from the Raven goalkeeper deflected the ball over the crossbar for a corner kick.

Southern played the Northeast-10 regular season champions tough, controlling a 1-0 lead late into the second half. With four minutes left in regulation, the Ravens found the goal that seemed to be sending the game into overtime.

However, Northeast-10 Player of the Year, Angelika Johansson collected a loose ball in the middle of the field and fired a shot from 45 yards out, that astoundingly found the back of the net for the game-winning goal with only one second remaining on the clock.

Katie DiDio (Vernon, Conn.) recorded eight saves in her fifth loss of the season, while Brittany Ester tallied three saves in the victory for the Ravens.
