The final day of a Florida swing resulted in a doubleheader split for the Southern Connecticut State University softball team. The Owls walked off with a 3-2 win over Molloy in the first game, but lost the second contest by a score of 10-5.
With the split, the Owls return home at 5-8 overall on the season.
The Owls won the opener in dramatic fashion, as they scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 victory.
Julianne Flood (Poughquag, N.Y.) capped the win with a sharp single up the middle that scored
Robin Priest (Cheshire, Conn.) from second base.
Brittany Gandley (Holbrook, N.Y.) started the decisive rally by drawing a base on balls. One out later,
Kerry Iacomini (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) delivered a ringing double to right center that put the tying run in scoring position.
The next batter,
Christina Wolf (Newtown, Conn.), singled off the glove of the third baseman and into left field. Gandley scored from third on the play, but Wolf was cut down at second base in an effort to advance.
Down to its final out, SCSU tied the game when Priest roped a sharp groundball through the Molloy second baseman that ultimately put her at second base.
The game was scoreless through five innings until Molloy plated two unearned runs in the frame. The contest stayed that way until the Owls' came through with some walk-off heroics.
Jessica Dempsey (Stratford, Conn.) pitched the final two innings in relief to earn the victory for the Owls.
SCSU was in position to sweep the twinbill, but Molloy put together a rally of its own with a five-run fifth inning that turned a 5-3 deficit into an 8-5 advantage.
Molloy scored single runs in the first and second innings in the nightcap, but the Owls surged back with three runs in the top of the third.
Flood singled to lead off the frame and moved to third one out later on a double by Amanda St. George (Shelton, Conn.). Both runners came around to score on a towering home run off the bat off
Megan Caporossi (North Branford, Conn.).
Molloy tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the third, but the Owls answered right back with two runs in their next at-bat.
With one out, Priest and Flood connected for back-to-back singles.
Khristle Lee (Aztec, N.M.) followed with a bouncer back to the mound, and the Molloy pitcher threw the ball into foul territory in an attempt to throw out Priest at third base. Priest ended up coming around to score on the play.
St. George then followed with a RBI single to right field that plated Flood to make it 5-3.
Molloy then scored five times in the fifth to take the lead for good. The Lions then tacked on two runs in the sixth inning.
The Owls return to action on Friday for a road doubleheader at Bridgeport.
